Too Human - Preview

I have no need to rub people’s noses into anything at anytime, but working in this industry has some of the hardest moments you could imagine. On the flip side, it also has some of the coolest perks ever, like getting a chance to preview some of the coolest games on the planet. This week, thanks to some cool intervention from MS South Africa’s part, we got a preview of the game Too Human.

Now this is a game of differing opinions, and from the comments on our site recently, some people are looking forward to this, and others are just not convinced. It is my job to try and give you the correct information on this game, and this is exactly what I am going to do.

Too Human is an RPG game. And it’s taking the genre a step back. It does not feature the deep story lines featured in most of the recent RPG’s, like Mass Effect and Oblivion, but it more a search and loot/ Hack and Slash kind of affair. If you are into the bigger story kind of RPG’s, and expect to interact with all sorts of NPC’s, making friends and building houses, you might find this somewhat disappointing. Basically, you are given a choice of 5 classes at the beginning, each with their own pros and cons, and I can’t go into too much detail on the story, I’ll leave that for the full review, but it impacts drastically on the players abilities. The loot that the player collects throughout the game can only be used by specific classes, and although you can sell the loot you collect, it does suck when you can’t use some really cool items.

The setting of the game is one of absolute amazement, as I have always questioned myself on the fact of do I like the more fantasy based worlds, or the spacey sci-fi themed planets instead, and when I started playing, I found that this game combined both, and combined it very well. It is a dream of a setting.

I would once again love to go into a huge amount of detail here, telling you all the ins and outs of the character tree’s, how one goes about assigning these skills to the player, and exactly how the different skill tree’s work, but alas, I am not allowed, but fear not, they rock.

The gameplay mechanics are rather different too, especially from a combat point of view, as wielding both analogue sticks could theoretically get you through the whole game, as movement is mapped to the left analogue stick, and the right stick is mapped to your melee weapon, and a flick of the stick unleashes a serious can of whoopa$$ on the enemies. Each player carries a melee weapon (Various) and a gun (Various), both totally upgradeable in a big way.

You will also have the chance to play co-operatively in this game, only via XBOX Live though, and although this has not been tested yet, it looks very good already, allowing players to seriously set up strategies against an enemy.

I want to allay fears here. Too Human got me very excited, and still has me very excited, and it’s looking fantastic. I cannot wait until the 29th of August, as this is the European release date, and hopefully we get it on the same day (We’ll keep you updated), cause I believe this game is going to be very, very good.

wow, this is very different from what other previewers are saying. As up to now, I thought this is going to be a flop.

There were a few bad previews for sure, but there were also a few good ones. Penny Arcade for example liked the game. As you hop from forum to forum you find haters and lovers alike. It seems to be that kind of game

Having played the demo (a lot) and now reading up on all the Norse gods etc I can say that I absolutely cannot wait to get this game. It looks like it’s going to be epic!

It is too bad the story is not as strong as silicon knights previous offerings like eternal darkness, but then this is a trilogy so I can only hope its all expanded on and i hope this games sells well enough to warrant the continuation of the trilogy. All the underlying norse mythology is really cool and I love the take they have on it.

The story doesn’t bother me – the controls do. Shooting is a blast, I find melee awkward and frustrating. RS double tap WTF?

Its awesome that I’m not the only one anxiously awaiting this game. When the guys demoed the game preview code for us in Seattle I was totally shocked by how great it looked and the overall playability of it. I wanted my own copy right then and there.

I think this could be one of the top 10 games on the Xbox 360 platform this year – if it gets enough publicity.
