UMD solution for PSP Go! in the works

PSPGo!

The PSP Go! is indeed a sexy – albeit expensive – little piece of hardware. And while it may be a desirable item, it also alienates the most loyal PSP user. Well, fret not, my cramped-hand companions.

Those of you have amassed a stack of UMD games, but also intensely lust after Sony’s sleek new Mylo 2 PSP Go! should be happy to know that there are plans in place to accommodate you. What’s more, it should be both free (hooray!) and available before the PSP Go! ships (Huzzah!)

According to Sony’s John Koller, Director of Hardware Marketing, “We’re in the midst of putting together a good will program. We’ll be unveiling that soon [because] we actually think there’s a significant group that will be upgrading from the 1000…In the past, we’ve seen a 20-25% trade-up factor, and I assume that’s going to be the case here. We’ve modeled that. So we’re looking at a good-will program—a short term good-will program that would continue for years afterward.”

Whether this program will be one that utilises the PSN as a method to digitally download games, or some sort of in-store kiosk that’ll allow you to rip your games has yet to be seen, but it’s nice to know that Sony’s thinking of you. And touching itself.

I have heard about UMD kiosk’s for a while now, we actually discussed it quite a lot in our podcast as well. As far as I know, that’s the plan, but it seems like it’s not as solid as I thought.

You call THAT sexy? Eish…it looks terrible. That “PSP 2” image flying around the net that was a fan-mockup was sexy. This is far from it. It looks clunky and like a serious step back ergonomically. It totally steps away from the design of the original PSP, which is sleek.

Actually, yeah I do. When the PSP Go! images were first leaked, I thought it looked horrid. After more images from E3 came in though, my stance has changed drastically. I do agree with you that ergonomically it IS a step backward – and the first PSP wasn’t all that ergonomic to begin with. The thing is going to lead to much cramped handedness. ;P

All pirates deserve to have both their thumbs amputated, so that their unworthy hands may never soil a controller again.
