Wii top selling 'next-gen' console in South Africa

The Core Group, the guys who distribute the Nintendo Wii locally has released a statement on Friday claiming that they have now outsold both the Xbox 360 and PS3 in the last quarter of last year.

In possibly the first real breakdown of sales across the country the Core Group has stated that they have sold 46% of the next gen consoles, followed by the 360 on 29% and the PS3 on 23%….

This pretty much replicates what’s happening throughout the world.

According to RJ Van Spaandonk (Group CEO) 100 000 next gen consoles were sold in the fourth quarter of last year which is a whole lot more than I expected to see.

The breakdown (thank Ewie) is as follows

Wii  – 24 000
360 – 15 000
PS3 – 13 000

According to MyADSL the SA gaming market is valued at R321m which is not a shabby number at all.

el33tonline has quite a detailed breakdown of all the information as well which is a very interesting read.

Nintendo’s Wii is ahead of the game in SA, and abroad

Hmm, now imagine how well the Wii might sell if Core had more than 5 games on the shelves.

And those numbers for the Xbox 360 are a bit disappointing, considering it had a six month to a year head start over its rivals. Though, I had thought there were more 360s in the market than that.

Ah, I should read more carefully, then DarthDad.

Still considering that in a quarter we sell less of all the consoles than the Xbox 360 alone or the PS3 alone sell in the bigger territories, We’ll be lucky if we ever see Xbox Live here 🙁

The consoles might sell well , but try to get the software titles that you want on the shelves , it is non-existent.

I think it is more the worldwide hype that is selling the Wii. I had one and sold it, I think it is a gimmick and once the initial fun of the sports pack wears off you realise that there is not much more to it.

The price is too high in SA- if it sold for R1500.00 I would say buy it, but then again the games are expensive.

If you want a console buy the PS3 or Xbox360 and one game a month. If you have money left in your budget to spend after that get a wife;)

I have the Xbox and PSP combination and love both(and the wife).

If you just play Wii sports and dont bother buying other games I’m hardly surprised you think it’s a gimmick. It’s a crime you didnt bother buying other games from Take2.

Be nice to get comments from Ster Kinekor & MI Digital on those nos. Must say I would have expected the PS3 to beat the xbox – especially with the 40gb version coming out.

Its impressive how well the Wii is performing in sales, considering the atrocious game selection we have here.

@boredhousewife, I am in contact with SK and Mi-Digital and have some new figures that I am just getting confirmation on.

Hopefully tomorrow morning I will be allowed to publish them.

Xbox beats PS3 in all the English language markets, US, UK, GB, Aus, NZ, so it makes sense I guess,

But considering the figures are released by Core, I’m dubious regardless.

I really hate it when people complain the wii is gimmicky then afterwards I find out all they played is wii sports.

If you look at take2 or dvdcrave you’ll see there are some great games available.

I’ve got 7 games, only 2 were bought in SA.

My point really is if you want to play a FPS I would chose COD4 ahead of Metroid Prime. There is only two reasons to buy the Wii and that is Zelda and Mario. I don’t really care about the Nintendo exclusive titles.

    This is my personal opinion.

But my point remains: Do you really think the Wii is worth R2899.00?

I was lucky enough to pick up The Bigs and Rockstar Table Tennis on the Wii from Kalahari for R150 each. They both rock on the Wii. Loads of fun especially the Table Tennis.
