Will Battlefield 4 Ultra mode disappoint?

1 min read

According to a post on pixelenemy this video showcases Ultra mode in Battlefield 4. For those of you who aren’t Battlefield fans then Ultra mode is the highest possible graphical mode the game can push out; the mode most of us would like to choose.

So here we go, prepare to be underwhelmed.

Yes it’s pretty and granted this is possibly the worst stage to showcase graphical power on but that entire clip left me scratching my head.

For those of you who aren’t into video’s here are 4 screenshots I took at 1080p.

tank

The tank looks okay if maybe a bit flat but the ground is looking especially bad and if the ground is meant to be covered in dust, where are the track marks? This is Ultra remember.

plants

Those plants… can you say sprites?

fire

Look ma! Concrete burns magically in this game…

barbedwire

I think wire is probably one of the hardest things to get right in gaming and it looks like that issue still hasn’t been resolved. Now I am being specifically picky here simply because this is being touted as Ultra setting and I was hoping for a lot more than that in the next generation.

How do you Battlefield fans feel about this?

Arent all these videos from e3? If so I do remember them saying it was alpha multiplayer, which means that they still have a bit of work to do? Or alot. In this case.

Yeah yeah…except with new story mode, better Frostbite engine, Commander (Which everyone complained that it wasn’t there in BF3), skyscrapers that actually collapse, new customization, new spawning system, spectating, 5 man squads, new suppression system…did you actually take the time to read about this or just be ignorant?

It’s good that you dont argue, i respect that but he is correct…regardless of how good or bad the game is…it’s nothing like BF3…a lot of things were improved and changed (the most important obviously being commander )…i felt dissapointed by BF3 but this game is going back to its core…not completely but its getting there.. on the other hand CoD is a repetitive game…however EA is at least trying to change it up….still…whether this game is good or not remains to be seen.

Ultra mode, bah! Looks like cardboard warfare to me. They should rather let the developer of ENB Series teach them how to make graphical improvements. Take GTA IV for instance. ENB is pretty hectic on performance but the graphics.

Beta is beta. Wait until the game comes out and then we’ll see how many PCs can handle it.

But you all should have in mind that it’s not a new engine, it’s the old but improved. Changes won’t be that change-y

It actually is a complete new engine. BF3 was running on frostbite 2, BF4 and other new EA titles such as NFS:Rivals, SW: Battlefront, Mirrors Edge 2 and Dragon Age: Inquisition all run on the next gen Frostbite 3. This is just a bare minimum alpha trial with almost no texture rendering

I highly doubt the validity of this. First of all there is no HUD or GUI in this gameplay and secondly I remember seeing screenshots that looks really similar to this waay before the BF4 announcement claiming to be ‘leaked’ screenshots. If I can find said screenshots I shall post them here

I would definitely say that is rather underwhelming… 🙁 Ultra indeed. More like ‘Ultra detail **warning – ultra may look different in your territory. Also ultra sold seperately**’

Also, gotta be honest and not meaning to hate or anything, that looks more like they forgot to enable Ultra detail… And then uploaded the video in error… Or is it just me?

Just to be clear – I like Battlefield. In fact, I prefer it to COD – it just strikes me as a better shooter and I’ve enjoyed the BF franchise more than I have the latest COD installments. However, all I’m saying is that this particular trailer is bloody underwhelming. Will it affect my opinion of the BF4? No! I was JUST SAYING…

Eh, I can’t say that screenshot looks too impressive either. It looks very washed out and there is no definition on the textures. It almost looks as if the DOF is totally off. The LOD scaling is broken too as those character models look as if they are built from about 50 faces and the posture is wrong too. The gun model looks okay.

But I won’t judge it by that screenshot either as I know BF 3 looked MUCH better.

Yes I agree but then again, this is a crap sub HD pic from the single player developer demo which is also an early build, but this is the DIRECTION they are heading for, the final build will look much more polished. I ask you to watch the demo again on youtube in full HD then then rethink what you just said about that pic

Yeah, I know. Just wanted to point out that that screenshot is also not the best representation of BF4/Frostbite 3 like Ultra video. The Frostbite 3 Features demo was quite impressive and the sharpness of the rendering puts that screenshot and the video to shame.

I am quite excited for the release of BF4 to see what the engine can deliver for the new generation of EA games.

Yup, and when the building falls down, it kicks up a lot of dust that washes out the color as one would think it does. Yes, it’s alpha, and rather look at the videos released earlier of the gameplay footage.

I’m not saying the graphics will be JO[FJASL;FJ ELITE!

but…if this doesn’t make you buy the game NOTHING WILL.

It’s pretty hilariously freaking awesome XD

And for the person who posted this article, just no.

I’m just going to smash my head into the desk…the skyscraper has collapsed meaning everything is looking dull because of all the ash and dust…and you know ALPHA?

Why not watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqJfCPcu0As&feature=c4-overview-vl&list=PL3Z0xw5JKEcndeW4MTlGaB5A347Oez93j

In original quality and then say you don’t see the difference?

I’m not saying BF4 is going to be a massive leap forward like a Crysis game, I’m not arguing that. But saying that a game isn’t looking good because of two major factors (the dust) and the fact that video rendering and uploading to youtube ALWAYS takes away from the quality.

In BF4 it’s the details that have amazed me. I saw a video where someone was running and an explosion happened right next to the guy and instead of continuing to run the guy actually had a sideways stumbling animation. Likewise their was another animation for being shot in the leg. Another one where a guy was running and got hit in the face by bullets and did this awesome ragdoll animation.

The particle effects and explosions are absolutely stunning in this and that’s not even a joke either. The water effects (waves and the ripples from the skyscraper falling) are really cool especially considering the boats can make their own waves.

Inside the choppers you can see buildings and clouds reflecting from the control panels, shattered glass shows a broken image/shattered imagine (refraction?).

    Ooookay. BF fanboy out!

I know I’m going to be trolled for this… But, this is one of the most retarded articles I’ve ever read on Lazygamer. The game is untextured in beta… Untextured… That’s the reason why everything is white – because none of the textures have been applied except for weapons and vehicles. Don’t believe me? Here’s a video of TEXTURED E3 footage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nJY7n8KaOY

I’m really surprised that you didn’t know this, or if you did, completely forgot to mention it. What bugs me even more is that most of the commenters don’t question what you say in the article? I guess it comes to show the collective intelligence of LG commenters is incredibly low.

I wonder if the game is optimized as of this build. If not, it is hard to think they would be playing will all settings at Ultra. That, or some textures and refinements are not yet in the game as of this build. I agree it is underwhelming, but I am hopeful there is more work that has been done since the build they are showing.
