Will Final Fantasy XV live up to its high expectations?

Right, I need you to sit down for a moment. Are you paying attention? Tomorrow, on the 29th of November, Final Fantasy XV is launching worldwide. Just let that sink in for a moment. That’s right, the spin-off game Square Enix announced back in 2006 as Final Fantasy Versus XIII – the one that seemingly died and resurfaced seven years later as the next installment in the main franchise – is actually releasing!

Naturally, expectations are off the charts. Can you really blame Final Fantasy fans though? They’ve been waiting around a decade for Square’s latest and most ambitious JRPG. I do think they need to be careful, and realistic with what they want, because as we all know, the higher the expectation, the bigger the potential for disappointment. Trust me, I’m a scientist!

Just look at what happened with No Man’s Sky for example. Hype for Hello Game’s open universe title spiraled out of control between its announcement and actual release, leaving many feeling incredibly bitter when it launched as what felt like an incomplete product. Sure, the developers were at fault for selling something that didn’t feature everything they’d promised over the years, but fans were partially to blame too – they set themselves up for disappointment. At least, that’s how I saw it.

With Final Fantasy XV, I fear the same could happen regarding unrealistic expectations. Obviously, I hope that’s not the case. As a huge fan of the franchise myself, I do want the game to be excellent. That being said, I have made peace with the fact that it could very well be average, or worst case scenario, awful.

Being an optimist however (and after having read an excellent piece on Eurogamer about Tabata’s journey to finish the game and watching the above trailer too many times to count), I’m hopeful, and somewhat confident that Final Fantasy will actually blow people’s minds. I think it’ll be so good in fact, that it’ll average around 9 on Metacritic.

That’s just my opinion though. Here’s what the rest of the Lazygamer staff have predicted:

  • Geoff – 8.0
  • Darryn – “The score of any Lightning game +1”
  • Zoe – 8.5
  • Alessandro – 7.5
  • Kyle –  8.0
  • Gavin –  9.2
  • Marco – “I have no clue”

Gavin surprisingly, has predicted a score higher than my own. His reasoning? “The game is overhyped crap but the reviewers are fans and will overrate it.”

Final Fantasy XV is out tomorrow on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Are you buying it on release? How do you think it’ll score?

  1. I have no expectations for FFXV and thus it will surpass them.

I have achieved this by avoiding 99% of the trailers, news articles and similliar.
    Both intentionally and unintentionally.
