Worldwide PS3 price cut announced

Sony’s big announcement for Gamescom this year wasn’t entirely unexpected but that doesn’t make it any less welcome.

Sony announced on stage at their conference that starting immediately (in North America) the PS3’s price will drop to $250 (160Gb) and $299 (320Gb), a price drop of $50.

But what’s more important than that simple drop is that the 160Gb PS3 is now less than any Xbox 360 that includes a HDD and the 320Gb PS3 is now the same price as the 250Gb Xbox 360. Easily making the PS3 the best option financially and putting real pressure on Microsoft to react as quick as possible.

While announcing the price cut Sony also managed to get some swipes in at the opposition

While others in the space are losing steam, PlayStation 3 is gaining momentum and giving gamers everywhere more of what they want: an unparalleled line-up of exclusive games and access to the best in sports, movies and TV, all at a great value

We haven’t yet received confirmation from the local distributors how much of a price drop we expect here but there is no reason to believe that the 320Gb PS3 won’t now be the exact same price as the 250Gb Xbox 360 (R2999.95)

So is this the price cut that is finally going to convince you to pick up a PS3 if you don’t have one?

The analysts think so with both Michael Pachter and Jesse Divnich predicting that Sony’s console sales will leap by between 30%-50% and surprisingly they are not expecting Microsoft to react straight away but to rather cut the price of the Kinect accessory (and bundles) and then see if they keep their North American lead before cutting base console costs.
