Xbox 360 Failure rate is better than I thought

A long time ago on a webpage not so far away I posted a story about the failure rate of the Xbox 360 being around 61%, that was over two years ago and since then we have seen many other numbers bandied around and now we have a new one.

One of Kotaku’s sister sites (The Consumerist) has posted up a GameInformer magazine scan of it’s survey results.. So to get that straight we are reporting on another websites sister website reporting on a scan of an article from a magazine that completed a survey… still with me?

Well according to the GameInformer survey the Xbox 360 has a failure rate of 54.2%, a whopping 7% lower than I first guessed and around 50% higher than any industry standard.

The PS3 and Wii had failure rates of 10.6% and 6.8% respectively.

However what’s more interesting is that even though the Xbox 360 had the highest failure rate and worst customer care only 3.8% of the respondents said that they wouldn’t buy another Xbox 360 if theirs failed.

I guess it goes to show that you should rather spend money on marketing instead of quality assurance after all.

Shocking! It may be lower than you expected lazy but it is terrible! Can you imagined if 50% or even 10% of car airbags or abs systems failed? Taxis would not be our worst problem anymore!

Well Sony claim returns of less than 2 %
so if we do a little bit of maths based on
    the failure rate of ps3. Then 10.6 / 5 = 2.12 %
which is more or less what Sony claim.

And then apply same principle to Xbox according to
the article then 54.2 / 5 = 10.84. Which is far less than the 30 % Microsoft sited for the first batch of problems.

    so which is right ?

Like they say 89.234 % of all statistics are made up on the fly.

Well I guess I am one of the suckers – I had 2 warranty replacements on my launch model 360 and when it broke the 3rd time I went out and bought a a 2009 Jasper model because I got tired of having crappy refurbs breaking every 6 months. Maybe you should do an online survey of lazygamer readers. But 50% sounds about right based on my experiences

remember the good old days of nes, snes, genesis and megadrives that you could abuse as much as possible. Drop it, take a screwdriver to stuck cartridges. total abuse and it still worked. 54 % is still a shocking number but that happens when you cut corners. shame on them

You can’t compare the two as if they are in a parallel correlation.
    The Ps3 failure rate had a 430% growth (10.6 -2 / 2) while the Xbox360 had a growth of 80%(54.2 -30 /30 ), based on the info you supplied.
The only conclusion that you can make from your 2% and 30% data is that Microsoft improved on their failure rate vs. the PS3. It used to be 1 PS3 for every 15 Xbox360s. Now it’s 1 Ps3 for every 5 Xbox360s.

You can’t divide both by the 5 times to get to the first failure figures.
That is purely co-incidence that it is close to the first figure quoted by Sony.
The current difference is 5 times, the relationship changes and can improve or degrade.
You should get a refund from your maths teacher…

But having a failure rate of 54% is shocking and means that half of that xbox “Sales” is probably people buying their second console and not new investors, since only 4% of those are not going to be buying another xbox. Which means the PS3 probably already have a bigger support base the the xbox360.

I still have no idea why everyone seems to think the Xbox is the cheaper option.

So if you go to the store to buy an xbox and you get to the till and the guy in fron of you also has one, I suggest yuo put it down and get a PS3, unless of course there are nine guys in front with ps3’s, then get the Wii, no wait rather get a stick and draw in the mud.

If you consider that you have a 54.7% chance of having to buy at least two of them, it’s actually a lot more expensive.
