Destiny’s scores could cost Bungie money

Destiny is out, and is not the runaway success everyone – most notably Bungie and Activision – thought it would be. While it’s selling like digital hotcakes, it’s not a critical success, with reviews scores ranging from a far-too-high 96, to a far-too-low 50; the middle out somewhere around 76. The fact that it’s not a media darling may cost Bungie a heap of cash.

Remember when it was discovered that Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian lost out on a substantial cash bonus because the game just failed to hit 85 on Metacritic? It seems a similar sort of agreement was in place for Destiny.

According to Kotaku, who dug up old documents relating to the rather acrimonious split between Activision and then heads of Infinity Ward, Jason West and Vince Zampella, Bungie would have received a $2.5 million bonus based on the game’s critical performance.

Activision shall pay to Licensor a quality bonus (the “Quality Bonus”) in the amount of Two Million Five Hundred Thousand Dollars ($2,500,000) should Destiny Game #1 achieve a rating of at least 90 as determined by gamerankings.com (or equivalent reputable services if gamerankings.com is no longer in service) as of thirty (30) days following the commercial release of Destiny Game #1 on Xbox 360.

Should the game have received a rating of at least 90 on GameRankings or similar  “within 30 days of release on Xbox 360,” they’d have been privy to a lump sum. With the game’s current 76.03% on GameRankings, and a 76 on Metacritic, that pay-out is looking rather unlikely.

Of course, as Kotaku notes, this was a rather old agreement, and may rightfully no longer be in place. Destiny is, of course, a tricky thing to review; It’s a shooter wrapped up in the trappings of an  MMO that requires quite a bit of time to play through to grasp – meaning at least a handful of those reviews shouldn’t be applicable. I think at the very least, a responsible reviewer would have hit the endgame content before committing a review to digital paper.

It sucks for Bungie if this agreement is still in place and was not amended to be one based on sales. Of course, that’s not to say that critics should feel bad about it; it’s their job to critique things, and not their responsibility to make sure devs get paid.

Not a fan of the way things are going at this point in time. Seems you can’t like/dislike or even have an opinion of a game without being biased or a fanboy or even…bought out by big publishers…Seems to be a lot of hate out there for reviewers though which is completely wrong 🙁 ….. I’ve personally always looked up to reviewers since reading gaming mags back in the day…You obviously do get the idiots that really put out kak reviews with nonsensical reasoning for certain scores(high or low), but still…..Its a freaking job though…and a lot of reviewers put a fuck ton of effort into reviewing a game…..Anyway….errr…..Rant over

Agreed. But I agree with the sentiment that reviewers ought to (at the very least) hit the endgame before committing a review to the interwebz. If it takes a developer x amount of hours to produce said game (with x amount of dollars), it would be unfair to critically access said title in 2.5 hours of running game time. Which is what some (not all) reviewers do. User reviews are even more guilty of this, but of course they aren’t professionals (as you pointed out).

Depends on the game. You can finish any CoD in less time time than that and you need less characters than a twitter post to review it. 😛

I often prefer user reviews to some of the other big reviewers like Metacritic since I’ve too many times been proved that their reviews tend to be biased.

And fair enough. Sometimes a user with 1, 753 hours will have insight that a game reviewer might not have caught. And these reviews are super helpful. But we’ve all seen how user reviews tend to be biased as well (if a Developer doesn’t do something – everyone trolls with a 0 and the game is stuck with a score of 15 for all eternity). Or after 2.5 hours a user provides us with all the insight we need “game is shit. Uninstall.”

Agreed, if you have only played 1-2 hrs of game, I tend to think less of your opinion than the one of the guy who put in a solid 10-20hrs

            September 17, 2014 at 08:27

Yes. True. I know I’m biased. But i think the difference is that lots of times the reviewers aren’t followers of the series of a game so to them it’s just another game. Also, I believe many of them are influenced by “gifts”. Since there are times when their scores make no sense.

Very true, I absolutely agree they have to play the game long enough/get to the end to properly review it. This is a creed by many of the reviewers I follow and those are the people I respect. Whether or not they like it , has nothing to do with anything. It is afterall, their assessment of the game and at the end of the day we might like what they hate or vice versa and this gives no one the right to really shit on a review for not liking/hating a game you like/hate. Its all about fairness as you put it. Developers put a ton of time into a game, and as a reviewer, it is the ethical thing to do to at least return the sentiment by putting the time into play and reviewing the game(while remaining critical)

The thing that most people don’t seem to understand is that, good or bad, a reviewers game review is always what they experienced. Just because you experience it different to the reviewer doesn’t mean the reviewer is wrong. If they thoroughly enjoyed it and gave it a 9/10 instead of the normal 6/10 that others give, then they really enjoyed it because guess what: They are human and experience everything differently.

It’s why I generally try not to hate on any reviewer who’s review is different to the norm at the time. I will call them out if they give a glowing 10/10 review with no reason. But if they give a bad game a 10/10 with valid reasons and an in-depth review of HOW they got to that score, I will respect it because that is their view and experience of it

The Witcher is overhyped because the last two games were friggin AWESOME. Dragon Age is overhyped because the first one was good and the second one was so shit, that shit teleported to Mars to get away from it. So a certain company has poured a ton of revenue into marketing the third game….

As I said in my post yesterday:

” establish a player-first culture in the company: Ok so the apparent “what the player wants” (always online)

build a digital relationship with customers: Read Microtransactions

eliminate silos within the company: So layoffs to downsize and make one dev team to do all the work? “

Let us examine these statements and what I believe they are trying.

” establish a player-first culture in the company: Ok so the apparent “what the player wants” – Always online is sorta the way we are heading so I don’t completely blame them for thinking that way but that aside. Did you know they are adding grappling hooks for rappeling down buildings in BF:Hardline cause they asked the players what they wanted and this came up as the most wanted utility item?

“build a digital relationship with customers” – Free games (okay a bit crappy games but still) and also the only distro to have a return policy

“eliminate silos within the company: So layoffs to downsize and make one dev team to do all the work? ” – This has been discussed. What they did was create a team to design the engine that will be used by all other business units. Thus we get the benefit from shorter dev times and better looking games with less devs needed per BU.

Okay time to stop. I like their games but I don’t like the company enough to defend them to that extent. I believe that they are trying to come back but only time will tell.

I think most reviewers just played the story and a little PVP and boom they were done with the game, last night I joined five other guys in a PVP match in a party and it was fun. If Bungie just created a single player shooting game that told a good story over 10+ hours of gameplay, with added multiplayer, then Bungie would have had a chance at meeting Bungie’s fans expectations. But instead Bungie created a lack luster game that revolves around always online DRM that repeats itself from get go. Not what fans were expecting.

Just for reference. The Last of Us scored 95 on Metacritic and 9.1 from users.

anyway these type of agreements are meant for when Activision and others know that the game won’t get high scores and don’t have to pay bonuses.

Ryan not everyone wants to play your style of game, just an observation. Obviously “all” developers aren’t to interested in it either. Its great to have the variety on offer, so games can cater for many needs and wants. Just spent over 12 hours in the story mode of Destiny and for me its been a blast and seems I’ve just scratched the surface. But hey maybe my bar isn’t set that high …..

Hey just for reference Bioshock: Infinite scored 94 on Metacritic and didn’t sell well Globally? Brilliant Story and Amazing game …. what happened?

I get that you like Destiny and want to defend it and read good things about it. But Destiny is not my type of game, Theme Hospital, even though I love shooting shit in games. Destiny gets the shooting right and everything else wrong. That’s why I am waiting for Cyberpunk 2077.

Bioshock Infinite was not a brilliant story nor an a amazing game. Bioshock Infinite was just like the opposite of what Bioshock 1 was, which was a good game. Bioshock 1 is like a classic, makes people want to reply it as time goes on. Bioshock Infinite worth 1 playthrough at least to the people who bought it, which doesn’t entice those who didn’t buy into it. Were they not saying that Bioshock Infinite will sell 200 million.

There is a difference between good to try out, good to play through once and good to play the rest of your life.

So why did you mention Ratings then? Bioshock achieved 94/100 on Metacritic and and 8.4 user score….. surely its good by your definition?

Destiny for you falls into the category of, “good” to try out”, fortunately you don’t speak for me. Now we are getting to the point, often when you make statements I get the feeling you are “telling” me and other readers a truth or fact when in fact its your opinion. When you harp on a subject I get the feeling you see it that all other gamers that don’t see a point your way have automatically made the wrong choice and you are trying desperately to convert them.

I have no issue that you don’t like Destiny or its method and I am in no way defending it as you have the right to choice and I respect that 100%. But I have chosen to pay and play said given games with my wallet and its a choice I alone have made. I got your message the first 10 times do you need to keep drilling it home in every post? Its akin to those extremist rebellious religious fanatics standing outside every gaming convention holding up placards stating we are all going to hell for playing games. It seems my stupid comments are being taken way to seriously.

I do anti DRM comments. Don’t support DRM. I’ve been doing it for years. I will say anything and I mean anything, just so I can say Don’t support DRM. I will make up stuff, I will go off topic, I will be illogical, just to say, Don’t support DRM.

I’m pro The Witcher 3 and pro Cyberpunk 2077, pro CD Projekt RED. That is all anyone will get from me. No DRM, The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt RED. Well until CD Projekt RED fucks up. Then I will use that to make my anti DRM comments.

I harp on the anti DRM subject because I want to harp on it.
I don’t think about you nor other people when I make my comments. I couldn’t care less what people do. I say, don’t support DRM, and people still go and buy DRM games. That means my shit makes no difference on here. Convert people. lol.
If I replied to everyone’s comments by telling them what to do or what to like, then maybe you have a point. But I post my comments and then I have to deal with people who say my comments are shit.

I give up votes to other peoples comments that I like. There are people who say stuff that I agree with that’s not related to DRM. And I give them an up vote. So I don’t have to repeat what other people are saying. I just make my anti DRM comments and pro The Witcher 3 comments.

What else was there. I mentioned Metacritic and ratings because the article was about that. You mentioned Bioshock and I mentioned The Last of Us, both getting a rating over 90, both being a single player game that told a decent story. If Bungie did what was expected from them, a single player game with a good story and some decent multiplayer added. Then the Metacritic score would have been higher and they would have gotten their bonuses. But they wanted to fuck it up by giving a online DRM game.

“I got the message the first 10 times” lol. I wonder how many, Don’t Support DRM, comments I’ve made. Maybe 50. It can’t be over a 100. Can it…

The risk of new IP’s I guess. I would NEVER put a clause in that requires a new IP to reach a specific ranking. It’s far too risky.

The sad part of all of this is that devs now see that new IP’s just get thrown away and then head back to the same copy/paste they always do.

It’s a vicious cycle and I sometimes wonder if it’s because gamer mentality as of late is one of only being able to enjoy established games?

People forget how important good narrative is. This is not the 80s or the 90s. I suppose the ending of Mario “The Princess is in another castle” is just fine for todays ADD on-line MMO gamers.

BRING BACK THE NARRATIVE. Titan Fall, Watch Dogs and Destiny feel like they fell off of a conveyer belt.

Why the hell Destiny could not make a CODEX like in the Mass Effect menu is beyond me.

That is easy. Add proper narrative with loads of backstory and codex like info and you end up with SWTOR. Great story and great game except for the fact that it is a MMO.

I understand that story takes a back seat. We old people are the minority these days. Between Justin and Miley it can be seen that what kids want comes first. That is why I am so critical when going to watch a movie these days. Sparkly vampires and Dystopian teenage societies aside I long for the days where you had the choice of anything other than action movies or extremely bad 25th remake horror movies (and I use the term horror loosely).

            Okay now I am sad.

The good thing about being an old school gamer is that we have already categorized over 3 decades worth of games that we will never forget. With all the HD remakes and emulators we will never get bored.

Just a pity that the Next Gen has taken 2 steps back so far.

I actually have a list of HD remakes I want. Just remastering not remakes mind you. I learned my lesson with Syndicate.

            – LBA and LBA2
            – Anachronox
            – FF7 (one day it will happen)
            – Kotor 1 and 2 (using frostbite!)
            – Fallout 1 and 2 (maybe make them 3D … would be interesting at least)
            – Septerra Core
            – Everything Dark forces up to and including Jedi:Knight:Jedi Academy. (Or at least reboot the series using the guys who did a brilliant job on Wolf)

A few others but there are fan conversions around such as the one for Vampire:The Masquerade.

You speak the truth there! It does feel like it was done “by numbers”. Just about every review I have read (which is going on 5 now) says the same thing – the game has no soul…and they kinda right about that.

I cannot fault the mechanics or graphics – but the story…nope! Its horseshit.

Proof that kak games can still sell well! Xbox fans bought this because of Bungie. They were expecting Halo open world mmo but was sadly disappointed because it lacked Halo’s good story line. PS fans bought this because they were understandably expecting a taste of what all the Halo hype was always about, and frankly because Sony paid so much for advertising rights they thought it an exclusive( HUGE FAIL btw looking at PS/Xbox sales figures). They too were disappointed because all they got were repetitive online pew pew pew! I luckily held off and now, will never get this game! Bungie will lose out even more as many folks who got it will shelf this game and never pay for any upcoming DLC!

I don’t think the PS4 sales have been a fail from previous articles I have read, I would say its dominating. I agree that the XBox sales have been a dismal failure but then it still hasn’t completely released worldwide so maybe that will change.
As for Destiny, I’m enjoying it and bought it exactly for the online pew pew. I love me some PVP and co-op. I think it’s a great game and caters to me perfectly. I never bothered playing story modes in COD and BF. Destiny gives me a reason to do it and I can do it with friends. So I am really looking forward to all the good stuff this game will release in the future. And I am sure they will build on the story line with future DLC since that is what everyone is complaining about, not that I am bothered about story since all I want to do is pew pew others 😉
So I think you are wrong that people will shelve the game but hey time will tell

Hopefully you’re right! Seeing this was the biggest IP launch in the UK in history, Bungie already made bags of cash off it anyway. What I meant by Sony failure is them paying millions of £ for exclusive marketing rights on the game and in the end only outselling Xbox One copies by 10%. Total Xbox One and Xbox 360 sales accounted for 50% of all sales almost!

Obviously not everyone is having these problems, but the silince from Bungie Help is infuriating. I see they updated their site a bit, where they actually now say it is preferable to but your PS4s static IP on the DMZ, not sure if my router can do it but @jonahcash:disqus has and he’s smiling all the way. Also they basically say you need ADSL but have other tips for Wifi users.

Haven’t ever played any other online game before, so not really sure. I did however put the PS4s IP on the DMZ as the port forwarding did not solve the NAT issue. But as I stated before I’ve been on nat 2 now for almost a week, so thats not the problem anymore. And I understand ADSL is a better option, but I have such a good/ fast/ stable mobile connection that I doubt it’s the issue. Some people have even stated that PSN on PS4 is unstable, yet again only for a minority of the community. Thanks for the link, I’ll check it out immediately.

The game should be played very differently to what most reviewers did!! In 3-5 years time when more of these type of games come out, we will start to see “better” reviews or rather more fair reviews….
Don’t start up the game and just go from story mission to story mission that would be very irritating!! You will feel like a sheep and every time your ghost has to scan something you will be looking for a vantage point for the inevitable rush of enemies….
If you play Earths missions and then go and play PvP or go and stroll around on Earth and go and see what you can find, you will be 10-15 hours in already!! Then go on to the Moon and rince and repeat above formula and I promise you that you will have a good time!! I have played 50+ hours and haven’t finished the story yet, and by now I really want to!!

The basic rules stay the same but if you play all 10 rounds the same you are going to win some and lose some so you need to adapt to what the other team does… Have you played it?

There shouldn’t be agreements for benefits based on critical scores. That allows too much tampering in the industry. If the game scored 90 but didn’t sell well, Activision could have lost money on the bonus as well. A bonus like this should just be based on how well the game sells.
