Heroes of the Storm gets its first league

I’m quite fond of Heroes of the Storm. True to Blizzard and their game formula, it’s easy to pick up, but difficult to master. I’ve been interested to see it played from a professional point of view for a while now. It looks like I may finally be getting my wish. The game now has its own league.

Still have no idea what the game is? That’s alright, I wrote a preview for it a few weeks ago, plus I have been making weekly hero gameplay videos too. It takes the steep learning curve of the typical MOBA and turns it on its head. I’m convinced the game will be quite beginner friendly, even to those who have literally no experience.

Anyway, moving right along, the league kicked off this week. Here’s what you can expect (via Gosu Gamers):

The league promises to provide insight on the competitive side of Heroes of the Storm, a game still in alpha, making its first steps into eSports. The teams themselves are those occupying the highest MMR peaks in the game and are comprised of popular Heroes streamers and eSports figures from different games.

Anybody can tell you that the competitive side of a game is completely different to its casual pubbie side. I’m most interested to see how these professional teams go about fulfilling objectives. Will they split the work load, with part of the team pushing while the rest go about dominating other areas around the map? Or will they stick together as one big powerhouse, resulting in large scale team fights all the time? I can’t wait to see.

There will be 8 teams in the league. Interestingly enough, there seem to be some famous StarCraft II players here and there. I just find it fascinating that these players are coming from a game that requires incredible micro to be superior, to something that focuses on one unit alone.

One particular roster eSports fans of old will find interesting is Team Snowflake. Led by former StarCraft 2 pro Jacob “LzGamer” Winstead (previously from Evil Geniuses), the team also boasts the vocal persona of none other than Greg “Idra” Fields, one of the most controversial and popular figures in eSports.

League

The first bout of games already took place yesterday, and the next set will be tomorrow (the 28th of August). Be sure to check out Gosu Gamers for all the relevant information. Are you excited by this? Will you be watching any of the games?

Starcraft is more about Macro than Micro. Although Micro is super important as well. MOBAs are more about teamwork and locked in strategy than the fluid dynamics of starcraft – which makes Heroes an excellent game for starcraft players rather than something like dota

well to be honest two things:

1st No MOBA can beat starcraft in both Micro and Macro. It’s a game with a much higher skill cap even though it’s simple in it’s basics.

2nd “teamwork and locked in strategy” That’s way more focused on HotS than any other moba out there. It removes the micro part of last hitting and denying but adds depth on team synchronization and objectives.
