Far-Cry-4-pirates

As we’ve mentioned before, piracy is a nasty thing. Developers hate it, but some consumers see it as a valid way of ensuring that they aren’t wasting any money on a disappointing release and publishers wish that they could send these freesumers to a special circle within the bowels of hell. There’s very little that can be done to stop piracy. But at least Far Cry 4 is doing a bang-up job on making the game that little bit more difficult for those who don’t want to pay.

If your field of vision in Far Cry 4 is a tad bit off, then congratulations: You’re very likely playing a pirated version of the game. The FOV feature is within the day one patch, but pirate gamers (As well as gamers who don’t have the bandwidth left over to download it) wouldn’t receive that slider.

Naturally, these particular pirates were pissed off, and took to Twitter and message boards to vent their rage at Ubisoft. Which resulted in creative director Alex Hutchinson tweeting back the following:

So what’s the big deal about FOV then? Well, depending on a variety of factors such as your monitor, size and seating position, playing with your FOV can result in a much better performance for your peepers.

Best is their attempts were futile to counter piracy, I checked yesterday on a popular torrent site if there were updates of the game aaaaand yep patch 1.03 is right there. The legit people had to suffer a bit due to them thinking they finally cracked the case on piracy.

            November 19, 2014 at 14:50

Sigh. No. Every single game that’s been released – retail or digital – when you install and activate it automatically patches to the current version upon ACTIVATION. You have to patch before you’re able to play offline when you install. Since this patch was day 1 – that means if it’s legit, you HAVE TO have the patch. Therefore, the moaning about “legit retail gets screwed” is just dumb.

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

            November 19, 2014 at 14:53

            November 19, 2014 at 14:54

Well no, day 1 patch means everyone who activates has to download it to play the game. It’s annoying as hell, but that’s how all games work really.

            November 19, 2014 at 14:59

This latest gen of consoles confuses me a lot. All the benefits that they had over PC are now moot, besides the drivers and hardware upgrades. No more “never need to connect to the internet”, no more “pop in & play”. Firmware updates. Day 1 patches. Always online. Paid-for multiplayer access. It’s just dumb.

            November 19, 2014 at 15:02

Indeed. I wonder why people didn’t see this coming when MS were hammering on about DRM. They just wanted to make it OBVIOUS, of course the devs were going to follow too.

          • ToshZA

            November 19, 2014 at 15:04

Lol, the irony is that MS were open and transparent about it. And they got the most vitriol over it. We advocated the underhanded nature of this transition in how we, as gamers, handled MS’s announcement.

Sigh. I just want to play games. Is that too much to ask?

          • RinceThis

            November 19, 2014 at 15:07

Apparently. To be honest I have internet because I like having access to the world so it really doesn’t affect me. The technology of the time will affect gaming, when there was a chip out for an 8-bit, better graphics, 16-bit, better, etc. This is what they call progress. Will give the new gen of gamers one thing, they don’t fucking moan as much as the old ones do.

          • ToshZA

            November 19, 2014 at 15:09

That’s true. Change is inevitable, but us older gamers are certainly guilty of bitching about that change. I also need internet in my life, so I’m not phased much by this transition either, but I’m also a PC and Console gamer so the best of both worlds is what I want. Just more games. xD

Some of us do not want access to world invading the only space on this planet that one can escape from the world. Gaming also is very popular amongst people who want to escape reality and humans. Gaming was founded on the reclusive state.
Gaming has become elitist and I am sorry for those people who want Internet at home but cannot get it for whatever reason because the merger of our electronic hobby has been engulfed BY THE FAT FACE INTERNET.

As much as I hate piracy this is complete and utter bullshit.

Had a thought last night, is it not possible for game companies to just source Nvidia and AMD for anti-piracy systems? Boiling the problem of piracy down to those two primary sources of pc gaming?

Couldn’t they just put some kind of encryption software in driver updates? Or at least some kind of license-legitimacy check?

Just one example, the other thing is to make this truly unbreakable some form of the encryption will need to be on the hardware. now like shader models it is just something is else that can go outdated making you hardware obsolete sooner.

            I see.
Hardware development already has accelerating generational ‘iterations’ though, so perhaps a stabilizing factor of sorts could be added, in this case it might as well be an anti-piracy addition.

I get that there will be a lot of issues, was just thinking that maybe the end result is worth overcoming the hurdles. But you’re right, it’s all about the money. It’s all about the dum-dum-di-di-dum-dum.

They harness the HUNTING part of the brain. It is so easy to press that PURCHASE button for silly things like Golden Horse Armour and think nothing of it. It was just a click of the button. Look at Candy Crush. They nailed it. I feel for those casual laymen, like those people you see at the casino who just sit there banging away at that button on the fruit machine.

Wallet rape but people just do not know any better. Just as you finish downloading that DLC the next best thing is trending.

I get what you’re saying and I do feel bad for shallow-minded folk. All I want is to have some fucking fun, but instead like with your HUNTING idea, I get this GATHERING all the OCD-achievement(s) hunting, which mostly grants you absolutely no real-world value at all (ie the experience has no ‘cerebral’ value)

It’s the thought process before that button press that irks me. The idea that milking an already barely-tangible product is completely okay. I’ve forked out for the content, so just give it to me, finished and as it’s expected to be played. I understand if you want people to pay for horse armor, there’s always a sucker around, but I want what I paid for. It’s as simple as that.

Ubisoft has done everything to make me not want to buy Ubisoft games. DRM, stupid DRM, Uplay, shitty ports, unoptimized, day 1 patches, unfinished games, DLC, DLC taken out of the finial game, microtransactions, ect. I don’t buy Ubisoft games anymore. I am the type of person who would buy a Far Cry game and love it. I love me a first person shooter. But Ubisoft has set it up so that I never buy another game from them again.

Now you have a bunch of people who are showing interest in Far Cry 4 through pirating the game. So Ubisoft goes and gimps the game so that these pirates never goes and buys the game. Oh this is not there and that is not optimized, why buy this shit.
If there are people interested in your game, you have to try and get them to buy the game. No piracy, no second-hand market, DRM, Uplay, that is not how you get people to buy your game. That is how you get people to stop buying your games.

Anyway. Fuck Ubisoft. I don’t buy their shit anymore and I don’t buy the shit that comes out of their mouth.

Not to promote Piracy, but the work model for Game of Thrones depends on piracy. Thanks to the rampant piracy of The Game of Thrones people are more aware. Word of mouth travels like wildfire. The book sales have gone crazy.

Anyway, we all know that these patches are not to prevent piracy but are created on purpose to see the DATA when people hook into their servers. That DATA from the hook up is priceless to their marketing department.

        November 19, 2014 at 16:07

Yes. Game of Thrones gets a lot of illegal downloads. The piracy leads to more dvd and blu ray sales and book sales.

Time Warner CEO had said about piracy, “Our experience is, it all leads to more penetration, more paying subs,
more health for HBO, less reliance on having to do paid advertising… If
you go around the world, I think you’re right, Game of Thrones is the
most pirated show in the world. Well, you know, that’s better than an
        Emmy.”

HBO has said that illegal downloads is not their concern but feels that the pirates gets a lesser quality product. Which then in turns, leads to more sales.

In the gaming industry piracy is used to sell DRM. DRM is used to sell broken and incomplete games, which you can’t sell.

Yes, but in the other games the anti-piracy measure is in the base game and doesn’t cause problems even if unpatched. This one by Ubisoft wasn’t done well. You need to patch the game to remove the anti-piracy measure. Basically everyone is a pirate until DRM patched.

Yeah but as I’ve said below – when you install and activate, games automatically have to patch to the current patch. That means upon activation you will have to patch to play. So this point is moot.

I still see this as a problem, I was in this position previously of no ADSL activating games via my phone or 3G dongle.

Activation (as stated as requirement on the box) is a connection server to verify copy validity; maybe a couple of megs. Now you suddenly you need to download a big ass patch to able to play something you just forked out money for.

            November 19, 2014 at 16:18

So I agree that the day 1 patch thing is shit. 100%. But since it is a thing – doing an anti-piracy thing around it isn’t an issue. That’s my point. We’d all be downloading the patch anyway, upon activation. So there’s no issue around the FOV patch. Or at least there shouldn’t be.

Just do not like the way the industry is going, game prices are growing out of control, more and more requirements on extra expensive services (broadband, Xbox Live, PS+) makes the market smaller and smaller with each iteration.

High cost of entry to gaming is what broke the industry in 80’s and 90’s.

          • ToshZA

            November 19, 2014 at 16:27

Agreed there – this industry is really going in the wrong direction. And it wasn’t just high cost – but poor quality games being shoved out the door. ET was the catalyst and is still regarded as the worst game ever made.

This pattern is repeating big time.

I really really want to love this game but they’re just not making it easy…tweaks to the xml files, updates to the NVidia profile using NVInspector, additional tweaks to the control panel stuff, a non-working Yak Farm Pack code all followed by uplay going offline every now and then leaves me wondering how on earth they could expect people to NOT pirate.

Looks like they’re releasing a new patch (1.4.0) on Friday (they only explicitly mention fixing issues for people with black screens at startup but also mention that they’ll be adding other fixes too), I hope it’s not a massive thing again.

“Though Patch 1.4.0 will contain additional fixes on release, we wanted

I’m not complaining about day-one patches, but this isn’t patching, this is like buying a jersey and then waiting for them to sew it together in my living room. I get that my problems might be specific to my setup, but after logging tickets and seeing no responses to mine and other people’s cries, this is just too big of

          Stealing…? really?

I’m not sure piracy equates to the use of linear concepts such as right and wrong. I find it a very poor use of a brain to be bogged down by something as infantile as right and wrong.

I can assure you no developer/artist involved in the making of these
titles (broken as they maybe) published by any of the numerous companies
known today sit and starve while we the ‘internet’ pirate the game.

The art and gaming culture in the middle east, China and even in Africa thrive because of piracy. File-sharing allows information to go to places it couldn’t normally go to give people the freedom from governments who tell them they can’t watch this, or read that. Censorship is a massive contributor to the very existence of piracy/file sharing

I find it very difficult to believe you never opened a torrent in your life and as such your high horse looks an awful lot like hypocrisy with legs. Even if you haven’t opened a torrent, surely you cannot be so obtuse as defend the groundless veracity of things like SOPA or stand against net-neutrality?

You call piracy evil, wrong? It’s simply part of a slow moving cultural shift in the way information is shared. Don’t fight against it honey.

If you want a rundown (or perhaps a better worded argument than mine) on
why things like piracy are so essential watch TPB AFK or better yet,
The Internets Own Boy. Both are freely available, even on the torrent sites *wink*.

In closing,I own the game. I love hard copy and the expansion of my collection of games so torrenting a title isn’t appealing to me. But fight on meeee mateys ARRRR!

Anyway, all things aside; complaining about a broken game you didn’t pay for is stupid. Fork out the $60, like the rest of us then you can be outraged. We agree on that.

            November 21, 2014 at 09:50

I’m concerned you find rationality and at the very least a valid argument amusing?.
You cannot conduct the discussion of an issue and its validity by singling out a specific point that invalidates your arguments premise simply by being hypocritical. consider every approach.

Further It’s not a matter of convenience. Rather dismissing the assumption that piracy/file sharing has anything to do with your moral indignation. As I’ve stated that it exists to serve a greater purpose.

It encompasses something much larger than condemnation via your moral compass that says “stealing is bad”. Unless you’re willing to make sure everything you watch and read has the permission of the creators for you to do so?

There are a myriad of ways you violate copyrights and “steal” simply by using the internet. if you want to get lost in the minutiae of morality and the uses of the internet then I suggest you switch off your router and go do something else, because one way or another, you violate your own morality on issues like “stealing”.

Being an Artist myself, I’ve experienced outright copyright theft of my work, I know the difference between pirating a game and stealing someones work for profit. All the while not being afforded any credit let alone royalties or usage fee’s. Issues like these are far more complicated than a statement between polarities such as right and wrong. I suggest you respect these issues as such rather than dismissing people and it as theft. It in no way affects ones character or ethics even by association. It’s a fallacy to even suggest so. Copyright law and distribution is an enormously complex issue surrounding artists and developers rights, however I won’t go into it, since you’re dismissive of the entire issue anyway.

Though, on the off-chance I’m incorrectly assuming you’re dismissive, I welcome further discussion of the issue dude, I don’t think your opinion is wrong anymore than mine is right, simply that you shouldn’t dismiss it because you find it “wrong” and greater thought should be put into it. Take a rational approach yo!.

You make painting. I steal painting. I make duplicate, put original back. Spread my duplicate to all the people. ‘Share’ your painting with everyone, everywhere.

Now if you actually wanted to share your painting for free, then this wouldn’t be such a big deal. But you didn’t just wanna share, you wanted to sell your painting. It took you time and effort to make and you’d like to see value for your work.

“But if people don’t like the painting, they wouldn’t bother buying it. And if everyone has a copy already, that means your work is great right?”
Yes, but a compliment only gets you so far in life. You as the creator are getting NOTHING, no tangible monetary value whatsoever for your time and effort, money in this day and age unfortunately being the the biggest value worthy of your time.

I get that hype and advertising create an insatiable want which is partly
to blame for this rampant need to consume all media, this need that makes it impossible to not want to experience the product. We have to
realize though that piracy is a product of that need. Consumers find it harder and harder to control these urges… urges created by things of want, not need.

Make all the excuses you want in as eloquent a manner as you possibly can, it doesn’t change the facts. Most pirates are entitled kids and jaded rebels, just look at any comments section of any torrent on any site. Wake up and grow up dude.

            November 22, 2014 at 14:29

Firstly, denoting what you call “facts” does not increase the validity of your arguments premise, there are no facts clear (and unbiased) enough to outright say that piracy is bad.

Let me just ask this question again, You’ve never torrented anything and made sure every video and song you’ve listened to has the official stamp for you to do so?

Piracy with all its facets and somewhat waning popularity quite rarely affect the development cycle of a game. Why do people continue to think that merely by sharing/pirating a game that the developers/artists go hungry that night or any successive night?.

Your anecdote is fallacious as it suggests a slippery-slope scenario which is quite invalid. Artists works fall into public domain and under creative commons and as such can be distributed quite freely across the internet. A majority of digital works are well protected by copyright law and the black letter law of trademarks and intellectual property specifically prohibiting sales or profit made from distribution. Artists are subjected too copyright theft and what in this case fits the description of piracy but artistic works of any creative nature tend to be distributed freely in any case, outside of digital works made exclusively for illustrative prints or online media. which at that point no longer matters if they are copied since we artists are well paid in advance and in most scenarios, have already provided source files and let go of the fear of it being “stolen”. It’s part of how the internet operates and will indefinitely operate.

I take the idea of file-sharing and piracy on a case by case analysis rather than condemning it in a bible-preaching manner that would denote its very existence as evil.

I can assure you I am quite awake and very much “grown up”. Just because I won’t condemn piracy does not make me less mature or blind to what you call “consequences”. At any rate, I won’t taint the discussion with ad hominem. File-sharing itself is quite harmless and in most cases costs people nothing. There are exceptions but as I’ve said, take them as they come your way rather than turning it all away as a matter of duty to be morally anal retentive.

Intellectual property theft is quite serious whether it leads to loss of profits, credit or the devaluing of mine or any other artists works, but Piracy of content that is already bought and paid for is another issue entirely and cannot be equated ad hoc.
I can show you what real intellectual property and content thief’s look like, but most file-sharing participants who download farcry4 or some other regurgitated franchises are not thieves or morally bankrupt individuals.

Thanks for the compliment though. Eloquence is not something I’d normally think of my arguments, bit messy actually.

In the comments section on this website when the topic is piracy, most people start and stop their argument concerning piracy at theft. Pirate copy of Far Cry 4 = stealing a car. That’s the best argument you will find from these people.

So don’t argue with them. Just make your own comment and don’t try to debate with them.

I have been following piracy news for a long time. So when it comes to the piracy topic I will always make the alternation comments. The type of comments people don’t want to hear or the type of comment they don’t want to comprehend.

Piracy is not theft. Piracy is not lose in sales. Piracy doesn’t = lose of copyright. If you hear anything different then it comes from the big corps.

DRM affects copyright. But you will never hear this. These big corps takes peoples copyrights and makes rules and laws concerning their copyright and takes control of the copyright, leaving the people who own the their copyright with no control over their copyright.

            Anyway. expecting a theft reply.

That’s a very long defense you’ve got there so I’ll break down my reply:

            1. I have no problem with file-sharing, that’s a part of the future whether we like it or not.
            2. Artists’ works do not “fall into public domain and under creative commons” without their express permission, something you conveniently left out.
            3. Extremism is unwarranted, I didn’t say an artist would starve, merely that it’s profit lost.
            4. And finally, yes, I’ve used torrents, but not for illegal content. (Except of course for The Fappening. If you weren’t in the least bit curious about that otherwise-inaccessible wonder then shame on you.)

I used to download TV shows that wouldn’t be aired here. Now there’s no excuse. The reasoning that piracy is there for the greater good holds no weight
anymore, simple proof being how this year a third of internet bandwidth
went to Netflix, showing the general public sway away from piracy and towards open and equal internet (which many can’t afford but that’s besides the point, I can’t afford anything Apple-related but my neck-beard is still surviving).

It’s not the act of file-sharing I have a problem with, it’s the pirates who abuse that privilege that our collective sourness is being aimed at. In the case of Far Cry 4, I didn’t spend R500 just to get a product I can’t play properly that pirates are blissfully making their way through with ease.

There’s a limit to file-sharing, and piracy is overstepping that boundary. If you can’t afford it, don’t go near it, as fcuking hard as that may be to do.

No theft accusations from me (RyanZA please take note), no pilfering pointing either, just a simple statement: Piracy is dickish and if you choose to do it you’re either a dick or not equipped well-enough when it comes to maturity. If I want to do well for myself in this world we live in, do you think piracy will help me get there?

            It’s as simple as that.

Original published works by default fall under CC unless expressly stated otherwise (by the artist) on sites such as Behance, deviantart, tumblr etc. Declaration of licenses such as CC or any of the other licenses that protect artists intellectual property while not requiring any registration thereof is at the very least assumed. Anything I as an artist post outside of my own website carries CC licenses and intellectual property protection again by default simply through the services I post them through.

Though licensing of intellectual property attributed to individuals is not the issue here, though I’m sure we’ve cleared at least some ground concerning this.

Piracy hasn’t overstepped any boundaries, infact. Piracy is the reason streaming services like netflix are now more popular than ever. We can attribute many paid services to the existence of piracy. It’s an issue from which companies can take many positive things from, regardless though.

Do not afford yourself the privilege of having torrented but now know better while denying the others the very same thing you’ve taken advantage of. You’re not any worse of a person for having done it and I dare say not a “dick” though I’m not sure character analysis is a fair assessment given the issue, If this is an emotional response to things such as entitlement you’re too far out into the woods the anyway.

The Extremism isn’t unwarranted, your anecdote said as much. It’s an extremists view too condemn piracy without looking at its benefits and pitfalls. I agree that piracy has negative impacts, but will not condemn it’s existence. Too place wanton dislike and indignation regarding peoples ethics because they take advantage of it, if you’d forgive me, is very poor character indeed.

Your position, while misguided by emotion raises interesting points I can at the very least respect that.

And that last little question. Thanks to piracy, when I was very young I had the opportunity to use Photoshop, barely out of its infancy and out of a kids price range. I was absolutely enamored with the technology and the ability to create things from scratch using only your imagination and a mouse. Many years from then I slowly became a published and skilled illustrator though learning everyday artist who owes my happiness to adobe (And the pirate I got it from). Today I own the Adobe collection (before Creative Clouds membership) in its entirety and was happy to pay its cost knowing my origins and I do pretty well for myself. Take a stroll over at behance or dA. all the talent there and great things they’ve achieved, many of those artists started out in pirated copies just like me.

Heck, go over to Ballistics publishing and flip through Expose. Some of those artists had “pirated” beginnings.

Some of the best and finest 3d artists in the industry never owned a legit copy of C4D or even 3ds max. Though, perhaps today they do.

So Yes, Piracy can help you get there.

I think that the piracy you’re describing is a thing of the past. It helped get us where we are today but these days on torrent sites (for example), all I see are obviously young people acting way too entitled. Honestly that’s what turned away from torrents. Maybe I shouldn’t have generalized – there’s always an exception to the rule – but that exception is being stretched way too far.

Thanks for approaching this so well, I’m used to angry and illogical arguments (it is the internet after all)

All in all, I get what you’re saying and that was the fine line I was trying to describe. So it looks like we’re gonna have to, as cliche as it sounds, agree to disagree?

We can indeed agree to disagree.

Netflix is illegal in South Africa. So if South Africans are taking part in Netflix in South Africa then you part taking in it in an illegal form. A form of piracy, even if you paid for it.

The studies suggest that piracy is not that big. The amount of people who pirate stuff. So general public don’t pirate.

You taking pirates and the many reasons why people pirate and putting it into a group of poor people who can’t or won’t pay for it. There is a small group and you have taking even a smaller part of that group to make your argument.

I speak the different views on piracy and you take that as am the pirate. So now I am a dick. lol.

            November 22, 2014 at 19:43

Netflix is not support in South Africa. No internet service provider supports Netflix. Axxess tried to introduce VPN services and that was shut down within a day or two.

It’s not illegal to use vpn’s. It’s not illegal to use torrent programs.

You can’t have it both ways. You can’t be against piracy and be for people going out of their way to access content that’s not available in their country.

If you against piracy then you should be against the use of Netflix in South Africa because Netflix is not available for South Africans.

This comment is not available in your region. lol.

Fuck them, and the horse they rode on. If not many people buys their games is not just because they can get it for free illegally, but because they are REALLY EXPENSIVE, and not worth the money they cost.
And before some idiot tells me 60USD is not really that much, I´d kindly ask you to consider that 3rd world countries don´t earn the dollar or euro-based salaries this games are priced for.
I´m convinced that if they lowered their unit profit, they would end up with a bigger ROE.

Either that, or make a decent game, that works as advertised from day one, which they have not done so far…

Ubisoft should just give up making games, and make paperweights instead. Because that’s what I got today, a $60 paperweight that won’t even start at all. I spent 6 hours trying to get it to work, and Ubisoft support team informed me that the app hang is a known error, and that I will just have to wait until the next patch comes out on Friday the 21st. I wanted to support Ubisoft because I loved the previous two Farcry games, but this is the last time I will ever buy anything from them. From now on I will just wait 6 months until the game is actually finished, and download it from a torrent. !@#$ you, Ubisoft – you’ve lost my business forever.

I get like 2GB Cell C cap that must provide an entire month of Internet. What these American companies don’t get is not everyone has uncapped fibre lines that can download as much as they want, whenever they want at lightning fast speed. Not to mention dealing with Origin or UPlay is often painful. I agree with and support buying legit original games, the whole portion of needing to keep the game constantly up to date in order to launch the game just needs to be reworked

How do I properly pirate an English version of Far Cry 4? I was going to buy it in Steam, but it says I will recieve Russian language only, which is unacceptable. Localization sucks, and there is no way to purchase the original version for me, so piracy seems to be the only option I have.

This might be valid if Far Cry 4 actually worked, but if you have the PC version you are just out of luck. Black screen issues (not being able to play at all) affect a huge percentage of us. I asked for a refund and you know what I was told? Basically, I was told to eff off. Tech support FAILED to help me, and they continue to lie about releasing some magical patch. Don’t hold your breath for that. We bought $60 bricked games.
