For day one sales, at least. When Nintendo announced the $250 dollar retail price for their new glasses-free 3D handheld, sceptics were sure the system was doomed; it’s relatively high price point put it out of the reach of mass market.

According to Nintendo though, that’s not the case, as they’ve confirmed that day-one unit sales of the system have outperformed all of the Japanese company’s other portable consoles.

U.S. day-one sales numbers for Nintendo 3DS were the highest of any Nintendo hand-held system in our history. More details about U.S. sales numbers will be made public on April 14, when first-week U.S. sales figures will be tallied by the independent NPD Group. Nintendo worked hard to get as much product as possible to retailers on day one to meet demand, and we will continue with these efforts moving forward.

They’ve yet to release specific figures, but plan to do so in the next month, when the increasingly shrouded NPD data becomes available.

It seems to have be pretty popular locally as well, if the hype on my twitter feed is anything to go by.
