Tell me Moore

Games have certainly changed in just the last generation. No longer relying on Quality assurance, games could be shipped broken, and patched thanks to the internet. They’re also addled with DLC and microtransactions, and there’re mobile games flooding every marketplace. You, core gamers that you are, hate this sort of thing. EA’s Peter Moore reckons you need to get with the times.

“I think we’re going into almost a golden age of gaming, where it doesn’t matter where you are, at any time, any place, any price point, any amount of time, there’s a game available to you,” EA Chief Operating Officer Peter Moore said in an interview with Gamesindustry, biz “And our job as a company is to provide those game experiences. And then on our big franchises, tie them all together. “I think the challenge sometimes is that the growth of gaming… there’s a core that doesn’t quite feel comfortable with that. Your readers, the industry in particular. I don’t get frustrated, but I scratch my head at times and say, ‘Look. These are different times.’ “And different times usually evoke different business models. Different consumers come in. They’ve got different expectations. And we can either ignore them or embrace them, and at EA, we’ve chosen to embrace them.”

Moore says the industry has to embrace change. It can’t afford the same fate that befell the music industry when people transitioned to MP3’s.

“We as an industry have to embrace change,” he explained. “We can’t be music. We cannot be music. “Because music said, ‘Screw you. You’re going to buy a CD for $16.99, and we’re going to put 14 songs on there, two of which you care about, but you’re going to buy our CD.’ Then Shawn Fanning writes a line of code or two, Napster happens, and the consumers take control. “Creating music to sell is no longer a profitable concern. The business model has changed to concerts, corporate concerts, merchandise, things of that nature. Actually selling music is not a way of making money any more, except for a core group.”

One of the bigger concerns gamers have is with the damned money-shilling microtransactions that are everywhere.

“I think the core audience that dislikes the fact that there are play-for-free games and microtransactions built into those… fine, I get that,” Moore said. There is a core–controversial statement coming from me, sadly–that just doesn’t like that, because it’s different. It’s disruptive. It’s not the way it used to be. I used to put my disc in the tray or my cartridge in the top, and I’d sit there and play. And all of these young people coming in, or God forbid, these old people coming into gaming!”

The industry is changing. Games are changing. We either need to change as well, or just bitch and whine about how companies are ruining games…just like we do now. I like that option most.

Okay fine. So tell me Peter. I buy a mp3 song (snickers) but I can listen to that song as many times as I want. Not just five damn times and then I have to wait an hour or get likes on fucking Facebook to listen to it again!

So my question is what gaming group or core group are you embracing with shit like Dungeon Keeper!?

Let’s not forget how the music industry tried to destroy, and still try, to destroy “consumer control” of their music. Just like they’re doing. Games as a service my ass.

More like a disservice, no fuck that. EA is punishing us for playing their games that’s the problem. Broken games, servers not coping, releasing essentially the same sport game year after year for full price, new Sims game with no pools that you have to buy later in one of the 20 DLC releases, Telling us SymCity needs to be online and can’t work offline. It’s all bullshit

The only change they’re trying to force is the money from my pocket. It seriously grates my carrot when these guys talk like I owe them something for making a game.

Remember when you buy (snickers) the mp3, it’s yours. You do have control over it for the rest of your life. You don’t just rent it until the servers get shut down or your subscription lapses.

We’re complaining about the microtransactions built into the games we paid full retail price of $60-80. Nice try to divert attention from your shitty business practices though & make it look like we’re the silly ones fighting against “progress”. This is precisely why I don’t buy your games EA. The industry is changing. We all get that. Some of us older generation gamers are uncomfortable with it, but we have learned to deal with most of it.

    There are things we dislike but that have grown on us. Things such as digital purchases instead of physical. DRM in games (as long as it is reasonable) etc;

We get it. Things change. Just like the music industry did. However, the music industry changed for the better IMO. MP3’s allow people to be selective of the music they buy. No longer do they have to buy a full CD that they only want to listen to 2 tracks on. The power has been given to the consumer to consume only that which they enjoy.

The same can not be said for gaming. I’m sorry. But comparing MP3’s to Microtransactions is laughable and stupid. It’s not the same thing at all. With an MP3 I am choosing not to purchase the full product. With Microtransactions and DLC we are being forced to purchase half products when we desire FULL PRODUCTS! A game costs $60 whether it is full or partial. Then we need extra DLC to enjoy the full game or microtransactions to progress.

What gaming is doing is taking the full music album, selling it at full price but only giving the people the 2 songs they like and then expecting them to purchase the rest of the album as microtransactions thus putting the price of the full album to nearly double what it should be!

Please don’t try to make us “core” gamers look bad by saying that free-2-play with microtransactions is the future when all of your stupid bloody games are purchase at full price plus then expect us to purchase DLC that should have been part of the game or including Microtransactions.

Tell me. Is SimCity free-2-play? NO!?!?!? Then why the flying f!@#$ does it include microtransactions? Why am I paying full price for a half game then? By your own bloody words we should be happy with the F2P model + MT’s. But this isn’t the model of your own bloody games!?

Please don’t treat the world like idiots. We aren’t bloody stupid. Saying crap like “I think the core audience that dislikes the fact that there are play-for-free games and microtransactions built into those… fine, I get that,” just shows how disconnected you are from your own company. Your company doesn’t actually do free-2-play AAA titles and your Mobile games are even worse. By EA’s own admission Dungeon Keeper was a disaster that should have been done differantly. Now you come and say that we need to embrace it? Please go fly a kite. But only with 6inches of string. If you want to have your Kite go higher you need to fork out more cash to the store to make the string longer. Also your kite will only let you fly for 10 minutes unless you pay to unlock or unlock cloud crystals by bashing in to other effing kites or purchasing them straight out!

People like you in the industry are the reason the industry is changing in the wrong bloody direction. I can guarentee you that if EA went and released paid for games as a full product that everyone else would follow suit. But no. You see only the money in selling a game and then continiously making money off of it by making us pay more and more in DLC and microtransactions.

At least if I buy a full CD I can listen to it all over and over with no limitations. The same is true if I purchase a MP3 standalone.

Gaming should be one of 2 things:|
    1) Pay for the game and get the full game with no Microtransactions. I can handle a Expansion a year or so down the line which I will gladly pay for if the extra content is enough to validate it.
    2) Free to play with Microtransactions. I get it. You spent resources making a game and need the money back somehow. People who like this format can play it.

But for all that is gaming STOP MAKING GAMES FULL PRICE AND EXPECTING US TO PAY FOR EXTRA CONTENT TO ENJOY IT!

And get games out the door with less bugs while you’re at it too huh? Gamers are sick and tired of great games that are crippled by bugs that never should have hit the shelves with just an ounce of testing beforehand.

Wake up and see what gaming should be and you will make your money. I can guarantee it!
Try it. Just with one game. Release a fully fledged, fully fleshed out game with all the content expected, properly tested, no need for MT’s or DLC to enjoy the game to its fullest and see what a hit you would have on your hands. But you guys never will because it doesn’t have constant returning revenue because people aren’t spending cash on stupid MT’s and DLC.

Well said. He’s not interested in giving gamers value, that’s what CDPR does. His only interest is pleasing shareholders & they generally only care about short term gain for themselves. This is where his whole rant against gamers is coming from, because we kicked up a major fuss about Brokenfield 4 that got his shareholders concerned, which lead to him having to answer questions from the people that control his sweet sweet bonuses.

Aah, so as I was saying, it’s because massive producers tend to not care what Peter Moore is referring to as “core gamers” expect from games anymore, it’s all microtransaction this, dlc this, while there is a hell of a lot less focus on what the gaming community as a whole wants, in essence, a complete game, like you know, before…when we used to buy games as a whole disc… anyway…

This comes down to another one of those lovely get what you pay for debates really, what we expect or at least what was the standard all of these years is that if you pay for something, you expect either a service or a product that justifies the price, so if a microtransaction enhances the game with more content etc. it’s fine, but the moment you have to then pay additionally to be able to progress or even enjoy the game, you’ve been sold a -in my best gangsta voice – sucka’s deal…

I feel your pain bro…. like the ending of most ubisoft games nowadays… sequel baiting like mad… and to top it all off, they water the stuff down so much, it’s like drinking a glas of water with whiskey essence… you smell it, you taste it, but it just doesn’t have the same kick…

      Awesome! Agreed.

Just one point to make if I may. I quote: “What gaming is doing is taking the full music album, selling it at full price but only giving the people the 2 songs they like and then expecting them to purchase the rest of the album as microtransactions thus putting the price of the full album to nearly double what it should be!”

To me it’s more like it’s two songs I didn’t want and then have to get DLC of the two songs I originally wanted!

Confused so is Peter Moore encouraging us to pirate EA games since they screaming Screw You and enforcing stupid policies and DRM on us?

What will gaming be like after 40years since PONG and in an age of NO internet?

A golden age of gaming? You mean an age where they sell you 75% of a game then charge you 19.99$ for the other 25% in DLC? Or are you talking about 30$ alpha games that take years to develop? what about pay to win game mechanics? what about annual release titles lie COD who make HAND OVER FIST of gamer money yet innovate NOTHING! Ever iteration is THE SAME! Every DLC is the SAME!

true but I think the gaming industry was also very new at that time. Now the technology allows for more focus on graphics apposed to the gameplay that developers use to focus on. I mean, why make a cool game when you can make a cool CGI movie/game thingy.

He’s right in that the industry is changing, but it sure as hell isn’t changing for the better. Him telling us to “Get with the times, Daddy-O!” just paints him as someone completely out of touch with gamers and people who buy games. Of course, he works for EA so that should surprise no one. The second gaming crash is nigh and idiots like him who have no business running a game company are the major reason for the industry marching itself off a cliff. I mean they’ve clearly learned nothing for the first gaming crash or the music industry basically committing hare-kiri over MP3s, and there’s absolutely something wrong with me for expecting my games to have quality and enjoyability whilst not nickle and diming me into destitution.

I know, I need to drop this twenty-cent attitude and get with the modern spirit. >_>
