The PS4 is “the worlds best PC”

HHH

Like most of you who suffer from debilitating injuries from years of rough sports and motorcycle accidents, I too am a man in pain. A severe case of technolust has left me with a pain that few can understand, and with the Playstation 4 being sort of revealed this year, it’s starting to flare up all over again. Especially when I hear comments about how just how damn awesome it might be.

“I think it’s a very smart move on Sony’s behalf to build this sort of enhanced PC architecture and then put so much in it,” gushed Epic Games vice president Mark Rein to CVG.

Let’s not forget it has 16 times the memory we had in PlayStation 3 – that’s not insignificant. Knowing that every machine has that, we can do crazy, ridiculous stuff with that.

The other exciting thing is that when you think about Windows, even Windows for most people is tied to about 2GB of addressable memory space. This really opens up beyond what most PCs can do, because most PCs are running a 32-bit version of Windows. It’s like giving you the world’s best PC.

As for those other touted PS4 features, such as background downloads, Rein says that they’re “super convenient”.

The kind of stuff that they announced that they’re doing, the level of convenience and things like that – they’re making a really perfect gaming PC.

I’ve always said that the things in the next-generation that aren’t just brute force hardware are all about the service and simplicity of the experience – the things that make it as fun and easy to get a PS4 game as it is to get a game on your iPad.

And Rein has a point. In this day and age, it’s first-world infuriating to plop a game into your drive and be hit with an “update required” prompt, although that’s a problem that is more prevalent on a certain other console COUGH “PS3” COUGH!

PC dont need GDDR5 to get faster speeds than the ps4, the design of a PC and say the PS4 is totally different. The pc is faster with DDR3 1333 memory in it because it utilizes the resources differently. The name of the game is memory bandwidth and if you compare that to a pc the ps4 doesn’t even come close.

Memory bandwidth does not indicate just system ram bandwidth but on how much data all the components working together ie CPU,GFX CARD, SYSTEM RAM. While its true that GDDR5 is insanely fast the rest of the system bottlenecks it.

From a developers point of view it kinda makes sense to compare against a machine running a 32bit OS. Not all gamers are technically minded and have the know how to buy/install the proper hardware or software. I’m just thinking about all the technically challenged parents and children I come across who try to provide for themselves or family. In that scenario buying a console is much more appropriate as they dont have to worry about any of that, they just buy the game and play. Simplicity has its place, just look at the amount of games on iOS vs Android.

“This really opens up beyond what most PCs can do, because most PCs are running a 32-bit version of Windows.”

I recently completed a Steam survey on my PC which collected all my stats. At the end of the survey it gives you an option to check out the trends of the Steam PC gaming community and how you fit in with that. I have a 64-bit version of Windows and, it appears, so do over 60% of Steam users. By the time the next gen hits us, this number will likely rise. In addition, it also looks like 50% of users are already using 8Gb Ram. By the time the PS4 finally releases, PC’s of equal calibre will already have surpassed these consoles. And to be honest – a decent i7 with a 2Gb graphics card etc from a non-Incredible RipOff retail outlet won’t actually set you back the crazy amounts people suggest.

This entire article is just about trying to sound like consoles are somehow gaining ground on the master race. Which they really really aren’t. Let’s be honest here.

    Viva la PC revolution!

Not likely! I think it’s only dumb people comparing PCs to consoles. It’s kinda like apples VS oranges. Comparing a PC (upgradeable) to a console (non-upgradeable) is a stupid argument, because you’re comparing two COMPLETELY different things. Of course a PC will outrun a console. You can just get the latest shit whenever it comes out! Consoles, on the contracry, DON’T work like that. But if you compare the set hardware that launches with a console compared to the hardware for PC available at a console’s launch, consoles usually have something to bargain with. Because they don’t need to cater for the masses’ different setups, they can customize their games for hardware that is universally ‘the same’, yielding superior results on an inferior technology. That’s why we sometimes see console games running on ‘inferior’ technology, being more ‘visually’ impressive than PC games running on ‘superior’ technology!

I wish people would stop comparing these two. It’s kinda like comparing rocket fueled space-aircraft to free-energy flying saucers. I.e., there AIN’T NO COMPARISON!!!

          • Kromas

            April 5, 2013 at 08:57

To be fair its not that bad. Its more like comparing a bike to a car. Both use an engine and runs on the same fuel but that’s where it ends. It comes down to marketing (in the case of Bungie) or penis envy (in the case of many gamers). I believe both platforms have merit but then again BOW DOWN TO YOUR PC GODS YOU CONSOLE MORTALS! Also don’t throw the term upgradable around loosely. Consoles have been able to be upgraded even in our current generation even if it is just miner upgrades. .

Needless to say the guy is creating a false impression on what PC’s are capable of to try and hype the PS4 beyond what it actually is. It’s a great piece of hardware but it’s not really groundbreaking.

Most gamers also run 64bit windows which allows up to 4GB of addressable memory just like the PS4 will.

Unfortunately they don’t allow unlimited space:

        http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa366778%28VS.85%29.aspx#memory_limits

And the point of the RAM statement is addressable RAM. This is very different from the amount of physical RAM you can shove in a machine. This is what the system can address at any given time. 64Bit systems have a limit of 4GB (there is an equation for that but I can’t recall it right now)

You can address 4Gb with 32 bits. Take out your calculator can enter “2 power 32”. You get get just over 4 billion bytes. Now the operating system will use some for kernel space and some for user space. With 64 bits there is no limit you are going to hit in terms of addressable memory. It is about 16 trillion Gb of memory.

Wasn’t it something closer to 16 exabytes? Either way, the point I was simply trying to make is that it’s not unlimited and yes a 64bit system is virtually limitless. However, the OS itself is still restricted. The statement of 64bit OS being unlimited is factually incorrect.
64bit is capable of huge address sizes. 64bit OS’s however have limits. That’s all I was trying to point out 🙂

          • Doe

            April 4, 2013 at 15:27

I’m feeling pretty dumb now. So hardware wise, anything 64-Bit can address more than 4gbs of memory, but our current 64-Bit Windows OS only lets us address 4gbs of memory (even though you might have more than that because your hardware supports it)? Is this correct?

What is the point then of having more than 4gbs of memory (which your hardware supports) but not being able to address more than 4 (because your software doesn’t support it)?

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

            April 4, 2013 at 15:44

Ok let’s put it this way:

64bit hardware is capable of handling huge amounts of memory at any given moment because it’s 64 bit. The more you increase your bits, the more memory can effectively be handled.

A PC works in 1 and 0’s. So everything is to the power of 2.

            Check this table: http://www.vaughns-1-pagers.com/computer/powers-of-2.htm

There you will see that 64 to the power of 2 is absolutely huge. That’s the theoretical amount of 1’s and 0’s a 64 bit machine could handle.

That being said, hardware will limit the amount of memory that can be handled due to a number of reasons. Bandwidth availability being the most limiting factor.

            It’s like this:

Let’s say you have an ocean. But it’s currently empty. But there is a river that can feed it water from some or other huge reserve of water.

Technically the ocean could take all of it at once. However, the river feeding it can only handle so much water at any given time. So the ocean is fed in smaller chunks at a time.

This is pretty much the same kind of thing. The hardware could theoretically handle the amount of memory at any time but because of physical limitations and a human’s capability of writing code to handle that amount of memory, it simply isn’t going to happen. Thus the limitations.

That’s the easiest way to explain it without getting overly technical.

The link shows the addressable memory for Windows on x86 and x64 versions of Windows. x86 is a 32bit instruction set and is superseded by x64 i.e. Intel and AMD cpus contain both instruction sets. The document suggests the 64 bit version of Windows is limited to 512Gb of total memory, 2Gb per process. But these are operating system limitations not addressable space limitations.

I know there are limitations on the current EggsBawks and PeeEss, BUT, with the new major beefed versions coming out, I really hope the devs branch out the minds and the gameplay style.

What I’m getting at, is that they make more thinky-think games, non linear, moar depth and all that jazz. It might sound like a pipe dream, but the current console generation gaming (I’m generalizing a bit here, so bear with me), is breeding a generation of idiots.

I use the term idiot loosely, but think about it: Only a few games these days have real depth.

I think because the PS4 is using cheaper and more readily available PC architechure they’ll get a nice discount from hardware suppliers, also saying that they intend to be kicking out 16 mil of these consoles off the bat gives they even greater bargaining power. So I think the cost on day one will be quite comparable to PS3 launch prices.

Also, even today I’m in awe at what they are still able to do with the peewee spec PS3, Imagine the possibilities of the PS4… it’s gonna be like Jesus-Raptor-Cavalry levels of awesomeness, with a heavy dollop of ZOMG, all wrapped-up in a blanket of WTF-Amazing.
