midweek mouth off

Quickly, while people are still in holiday mode, and not really paying attention… it’s time to reveal your biggest movie guilty pleasure – those films you secretly love which either cinephiles or the rest of the world loathes. So, yeah, you know how you own a copy of The Twilight Saga, or watch The Smurfs at least once a month –  now’s the time to get it off your chest.

Galaxy Quest is freaking awesome dude, and is VERY highly regarded by nearly everybody. No need to feel guilty at all.

Sucker Punch – and I feel no guilt about that whatsoever.

I also cannot see why people hate Sucker Punch. Loved it myself.

I loved that movie for one reason only, Jena Malone. It wasn’t as bad as I was led to believe but I did feel that the ending left much to be de…bated.

Look, the film is very, VERY well made from a technical standpoint, but its one of the most extreme examples of style over substance. I know that fans have dug through every frame to pull together this multi-layered, high concept idea of a story that, supposedly, all us detractors were just too blinkered to see, and I know that Snyder himself has said that there’s a lot more going on in the story than what’s actually shown in the movie, but I cannot judge a movie on ethereal, could-maybe-have-been-if-you-squint-at-it-from-the-right-angle narrative points. I have to judge it based on what is there.

And what’s there is a series of seemingly unrelated, but amazing looking and sounding tech demos, which could have been pulled together and been WAAAAY more if not for it’s garbled script that cannot convey its story coherently.

Snyder is a decent director, with an amazing flair for visuals, but he still has a far way to go in the screenwriting department.

Yeah I also found the story very muddlesome but it was gorgeous to look at. He even made Emily Brown look hot which is no easy task.

I hated it mainly because of Denis Hopper.

Well, the only problem with this is the “manly man” friends who do not believe men should watch musicals. But screw them, I love watching “7 Brides for 7 Brothers”

These “manly men” miss out on some GREAT movies because “men don’t watch that crap”. Magic Mike…never seen it

Outlander (2008) is always good fun for me but I’m a sci-fi and horror junkie. My Mrs and I also never change the channel when 50 First Dates or The Wedding Singer is on, we love it.

When I first started dating my wife and we went to the movies, the rules were that we would alternate movie choices. So, to make a long story short, I watched A LOT of romcoms. However, although I only admitted it to her many years later, I really actually dug the British romcoms. They still got as sappy as the Hollywood counterparts, but the humour was often far superior and edgier.

Pride and Prejudice (The one with Keira Knightley). I cannot fall asleep if my mind isn’t distracted (I’ve got Aspergers). I often watch boring movies if it starts nearing 2AM and I’m still not able to sleep. I once put in Pride and Prejudice, and was hooked. I’ve since watched the movie about 20 times, and have never been able to fall asleep during it. Love it.
