Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance review round-up

We’ve already highlighted how some early reviews have pegged Platinum Games’ Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance  as the best Metal Gear title released this generation – but now that the game’s been released in the states, we’re seeing a torrent of other reviews come in – and it looks like Platinum may have struck gold.

Here are the scores as they stand right now:

Destructoid – 9/10
Eurogamer – 9/10
Famitsu – 39/40
gamesTM – 9/10
Gamespot – 8.5
GamingBolt – 8.5/10
GodisaGeek – 8/10
IGN – 8.5
New Game Network – 79/100
NowGamer – 8/10
OPM – 7/10

Those are some pretty good scores, barring the two less-than-amazing scores from OPM and New Game Network, and an unusual one for when a developer takes on somebody else’s IP; reminding me a little of Capcom’s incredible work making handheld Zelda games.

The biggest complaint seems to be the game’s sometimes wonky camera – but it’s not enough to detract from the experience.

Eurogamer’s Rich Stanton had this to say:

“If Revengeance didn’t have camera issues this would be the easiest 10 I’ve ever given. As things stand it’s still brilliant, staking out new territory in the genre and adapting certain Metal Gear characteristics so well that it makes the competition look outrageously bad. This is simply the ultimate one-man show, worth its ticket price many times over, an experience that improves exponentially as it gets faster and as you get better. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a thrilling and almost flawless fighting game – come get some.”

Fans of the Metal Gear universe needn’t worry that it pisses all over the established canon either – because it largely exists outside of it.

“In terms of contributing to the Metal Gear canon, Revengeance isn’t doing much which seems significant,” says Destructoid’s Jim Sterling. “It feels as though it exists in a bubble all its own, a single instance where a crisis arises and is overcome, and the impact of these events feel largely resolved by the conclusion.”

Platinum has quickly become one of my favourite developers this generation, producing games that don’t make a whole bunch of narrative sense, but make up for all of their misgivings by being incredibly deep, and most importantly fun action experiences. If it’s even half as good as Vanquish or Bayonetta, it’ll still be magnificent.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance should be in stores locally this Friday, for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

The length of this game is off-putting. I just can’t see myself paying R600 for a game that’s not even longer than CODMWBLOPS12345. This is bargain bin material, lads. Sure, it might be the best Metal Gear title in years (pfft losers). It might even feature some of the most awesome sword-fighting but… no… I’ll wait for it to hit the sub-R200 range or even if I spot it in the bin at BT Games. I actually need to see if DmC isn’t in the bin yet.

I have heard so many good things about this game. ANIME CRAZY BOSS FIGHTS ON CRACK. It is that fight in MGS4 when he has no arms but for 7hours.

Only bad news that I have heard is that for a NINJA he is very stiff and cant jump off walls or anything so it can be a little limiting but its quickly replaced with some shit hot SLICE AND DICE.

I’m too big of a MGS fan to not pick this up. Getting the super cool collectors edition that comes with a Raidan doll. 😀

Was Meat Gear Rising on purpose at the end there?

Also, to be fair, New Game Network gave them a 7.9, couple of others that you didn’t mention gave them 8. Not a lot of difference there?

GT trailers gave it a 9.2, not that I care but I can’t wait to play this not judging by the scores but the demo and the fact that it’s made by platinum games. Length does not matter, achievements unlockables, VR missions, S rankings , Harder difficulty … I’m sold through and through. Bloody Platinum Games, setting new standards YET AGAIN for the H&S Action Genre. Damn this game is going to replace Bayonetta in my heart

Ah, ok, I thought it would come out on the 21st – but now that I check the place I ordered it does say 22nd : ). But I’ve also now heard rumours that there is a delay in the shipment for the LE and now it may only come out on Monday?
