Ratchet & Clank Reviewed

Gamespot has had the opportunity to review Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Desctruction and has some mixed feelings about the game.

Getting straight to the point the good parts of the game are

  • Shooting and platforming is always fun
  • Lots of useful and different weapons
  • Beautiful and colourful visuals
  • Tight Controls

The bad parts would be

  • Uninteresting story
  • Bad ending
  • Game lacks an identity
  • Difficulty is too easy

So all in all quite a mixed bag, it seems to just be missing the cutting edge and while it will be a great title to add to your collection it is still not that elusive system mover that the PS3 is looking for.

Just for the sake of the balance which is lacking here, the game is averaging 90% on Metacritic (with only 3 reviews out of 17 below 90%). Gamespot’s is the lowest, and is by no means a reflection of general opinion, heck there are some 7/10 reviews for Halo 3 too.

Which is why I didn’t put the figures in, just the main points. Gamespot has the higher ratings linked to it as well…. The big question is if it is the system mover they are looking for.

It doesn’t look like it from the reviews I have seen

    Thanks Bob!

I still think this game will be a system mover, I know I will be buying it no matter what the reviewers say!

Jeepers Gavin, I gotta say I just checked out metacritic on this game and I gotta say your story is so one sided it is sick. You make it seem like its another bomb for the ps3, when infact like Bob says it has a score of 90 overall (from 17 reviews) with two 100%’s and a 94 from IGN. Some even say its the best game on the PS3!

Well to be honest it could be the best PS3 game coz there arent many thus far. Pity platformers arent my type or else I could give it a whirl.

I just have this feeling any skank made against any PS3 game turns out as a “but Halo 3 got this” excuse. Lol… MGS4 & FFXIII will be system movers, NGS & Heavenly Sword failed to be such games even if they are great.

Seriously LazyGamer. You really are a fanboy. I see day in and day out you posting bad stories about the PS3 but then the one time a good game comes out and has good reveiws you only show the bad one. I really dont see how someone who only owns a 360 can have a website like this. You should really consider making this website for the Xbox 360 only.

@Jak, you obviously miss the good PS3 stories that I post as well. Seeing the negative only are we?

Yes maybe I missed the other reviews on this one but if you notice I often report on Gamespot as I like the way they review and I find them accurate to my tastes in gaming.

I have also constantly asked for a PS3 fan to write for the site as well yet no one has actually stepped forward. I don’t want a rabid PS3 fanboy just someone who can find the good PS3 stories. Hell at least email me the tips like the Wii and 360 fans do. The worlds media is against the PS3 so I am finding it hard to find good news stories.

Luckily I have a comments section to even out the views 😉

@LazySAGamer You must have had Xbox360 Fanboy goggles on if you didn’t see all the other positive reviews of this game. The news is all over the place! As metioned previously, almost every other major gaming website gave the game a rating of over 90%.

Also, this article says more about the ineptetude of the person reviewing the game (and the negative impact on Gamespot’s credibility) than it does about the game itself.

@papa, when I read the first article this morning this was the only review being bandied about. Obviously this has changed quite considerably since then.

I also wouldn’t say that gamespot is inept or lacks creidibility just because they disliked the game. Take a look at how Play magazine rated it. They gave it 10/10 but said “and to receive that same level of satisfaction I speak of, you really do have to be in touch with some very specific creative decisions that went into making Tools of Destruction”

They also think it is better than BioShock, this would be the same Play magazine that when it reviewed Lair and gave it shocking results was called a Microsoft mouth piece.

You can’t win them all and we are all allowed to make mistakes. I still think the majority of Gamespot reviews have the same outlook as my own personal reviews and I will keep using them.

I was going to say that it’s hard to believe that Ratchett and Clank would be best game on the PS3, but then again, if I think of the days when my mates had Playstations and PS2, they were all playing Crash Bandicoot, R&C and Jak and Daxter. I think 3d platformers are still a strong genre if done properly.

Personally, i’d drop my 360 fanboi glasses and buy a PS3 if they were to make a new Jak and Daxter (and do it right). For now, I’m looking really forward to Crash of the Titans.
