[Guest review by Martin Brown]

This weekend I had the pleasure of playing Singstar afrikaanse treffers with a group of friends. I am still trying to figure out if the game play was the reason for the side splitting laughs or the lack of singing skills.  The game is pretty similar to the other Singstars out there, Sony obviously don’t want to mess with a winning combination. You compete against a friend, online or offline(PS3 only), trying to keep your tone pitch perfect. The main difference is these songs are in Afrikaans.

With legends such as Ge Korsten (Liefling), Steve Hoffmeyer (Pampoen) and newer artists such as Jack Parrow (Kooler as ekke), there is a large variety for you to sing along to. Sadly you cannot pick a single genre as the list of songs is just too small. Only 30 songs made it in, but you can be assured that you will get many fun hours out of it, even if you have less talent than I do. We are hoping that Sony will update the list to get more songs. Currently the Singstar library contains well over 1500 songs.

I preferred the newer songs as I strangely knew most of the words. with the exception of “Kooler as eke”, To this day I have no idea what Jack is singing about. I have to admit that Leeuloop and liewe lulu do however produce some rather strange words if you get a little arrogant and don’t look at the screen. A group effort is a definite when Karen Zoid’s Afrikaaners is plesierig comes on. You just can’t help but join in.

Conclusion:

I would really recommend this game for anyone that likes Afrikaans songs. If you don’t buy it , Sony won’t keep bringing local hits to our consoles. They really hit the mark with this game and managed to keep most of the audience happy. We can only hope they will bring more over and give our local artists the boost they really need

Scoring:

Gameplay: 8.0

It’s rather simple, even having English menus. Not much is required when it comes to skill, In fact the less you have the better the game gets.

Design and Presentation: 7.0

Keeping to a tried and tested format the game hasn’t changed much since the first Singstar back in 2004. It would have been nice to have had a few extra features like a dance version (for Leeuloop) but there is more than enough to keep you satisfied. It is after all a singing game.

Value: 7.5

This is a great party piece, a brilliant ice breaker and for the price (between R400 for the stand alone and R615 for game and microphones) you know it is value for money.

Overall: 8.0

If you are a fan of this range and love Afrikaans music go out now and buy the game already! However if you have never played one and need to break into this genre there is no reason not to buy this game.

[Afrikaans Editing By Frederick Blake ]
