Cars put babies to sleep, and now Ford’s cot replicates that

Ford max motor dreams

I never thought that much about sleep until I had a kid. You know how it goes, you get tired you go to sleep. Sometimes you go out partying and stay up too late, needing to sleep in the next day or walk around like a zombie until you catch up on much-needed rest. But beyond that, I didn’t really stress about it too much. Then I made a new person, and sleep is something I think about every day. My kid isn’t the worst sleeper I’ve known, but she still doesn’t sleep through the night. And some evenings, it seems to take forever to get her to nod off. If one thing is guaranteed, though, it’s that a car ride will conk her out, and that’s something Ford is looking to capitalize on.

When I first saw this, I thought it was an April Fools joke. But it’s actually real. Brought out by Ford Spain, the Ford Max Motor Dreams mimics the feeling of car travel in the cot. From the white noise of the engine to the lights passing by from street lamps to the gentle movements, this crib pretty much mimics the baby’s experience from the comfort of your own home. Here is a video showcasing the new tech:

I like that you can sync an app with it and exactly replicate the car rides that you usually take with your little one. This sounds so hypnotic, we should probably get one for Geoff and finally cure his insomnia.

That said, I do have my doubts. I mean, just imagine the safety issues that could come up – the last thing you want is for these cots to be recalled and your precious baby’s life to be at risk. Also, if your little one manages to roll over, are there sensors to make sure the thing stops moving or will it crush them in the moving parts? Plus, without any price listed, this might be a very expensive novelty cot that your kid outgrows as soon as she figures out how to climb over those very low walls.

Okay, so I wouldn’t spend money on it, but I can definitely see the appeal. This beats loading your kid in the car seat and hoping a quick trip around the block knocks them out. But it also ends up like so many other baby devices – overpriced and only really worthwhile for a couple months before the kid is able to overcome it.

Kiddie car rides are a last resort. DO NOT ABUSE!
As great as this product seems, I would never get something like this for my child. It smacks of lazy parenting to me. Man/Woman up and take care of your child!
Before the invention of cars, people were taking care of their children for quite a while and rather successfully, too, considering we’re still here.

When my wife was in hospital year before last….. Man, that kid would not fall asleep without Mommy….. Ouch, it was difficult. Car helped, but not two nights running.

Bull, if it does no harm to the child why not? You are welcome to live in the middle ages, maybe go back to normal washable daipers?

There is an advantage to this (but I still think it is silly)

So, me, baby, midnight. Prepare room for sleeping baby, lights in passage off, bathroom to provide a bit of light, same with path from front door. Strapped her into the Subaru (car then), she is happy. And we go. I travel normal route, some highway, some not. She is asleep. Drive a bit more to get her that way.

Ok. Home. Get her out. Switch off car. She wakes up, startled and looks around. Ok, so we know that. Leave car idling in driveway (locked gate, but still…….) and take her to room, carefully. Hope one of the Siamese do not want to chat (they are LOUD)…. And we make it. Great. Put her down, gently on her bed. Quietly exit, making soothing noises. Switch off car, lock house.

A bit of a mission. But, as Heretic, said below, should not be first option.

Them waking up as you take them out is the worst. The drive thing doesn’t work on my lad anymore for that reason. The 5-10 min power nap in the car just gets him all hyper again.
