HD Threesome..

Well if it’s not enough to have 2 HD formats slugging it out to be the top dog in the high definition market, another company New Medium Enterprises wants in on the HD action.

This company is based in London and their proprietary HD format is known as HD VMD (High Definition Versatile Multilayer Disc).

HD VMD seems to have at least some pull in the market since they claim that their tech is being adopted in over a dozen countries including Australia, Brazil, Central Europe, China, France, Germany, Iceland, India, Japan, Scandinavia, Middle East, Russia and the United States. Now I’ll be honest here, I’ve never heard about this format until today.

These guys seems to attacking the current weak spot of the Blu-Ray and HD DVD which is price. They market the HD VMD format as a low cost, high quality alternative.

HD VMD have an ultimate storage capacity of 100GBs but currently these guys are only capable of churning out 30GB discs, still not too shabby.

The entry level VMD player costs €179 ($250).

This format is not supported by any major film studios or any of the gaming giants (yet). If just one major industry, say Bollywood maybe, embraces HD VMD then I certainly think we could be in for a 3 way race to see what the future HD format will be.
