PewDiePie explains impact of Adblock on YouTube and content creators

Pewdiepie block

Love or hate his videos, PewDiePie is an important person on YouTube. He makes a ridiculous amount of money from playing games and is something of an idol for those looking to get into the YouTube game – even if they don’t want to replicate his content, of course they want to replicate his success. However, it’s increasingly difficult for new YouTubers to penetrate the market, something made even more tricky with the launch of RedTubeYouTube Red. And PewDiePie explains one of the main reasons.

Over on his blog, PewDiePie explains some thoughts on YouTube Red. He acknowledged that despite the fact that he will have a new show on YouTube Red, he knows that many people haven’t been happy about it. Many of those people are wondering why YouTube would switch to a paid model, especially when it’s a part of ad-giant Google. Well, apparently YouTube is losing money, even though it gets more than a billion viewers. So, what’s the problem? A big part of it is Adblock.

Based on his own stats and info, 40% of PewDiePie’s viewers use Adblock, a percentage that has grown over the years:

It’s a number that has grown a lot over the years, from roughly 15-20% when I started. And it’s not unlikely that it will keep growing.

What this means is that YouTubers lose about 40% of their ad income.

Personally, I’m ok with if you use adblock on my videos. Ads are annoying, I get it, I’m not here to complain about that.

But for smaller channels, this number can be devastating.

YouTube Red had to resort to a paid model to compete with the likes of other streaming services. Sure, it would have been great to continue offering free content to people who want it, but once people use Adblock, it simply isn’t affordable, let along profitable.

Advertising trends are already changing so much, with many companies and brands moving away from using pre-made ad reels or banners, opting instead of content marketing – those sponsored YouTube videos that show off their product but from the personalities you already know and maybe love. Those can’t be Adblocked, plus they tend to feature normal engagement figures for those personalities, something that makes the sponsors very happy. Of course, this is even more of a problem for YouTube as they are completely unable to get any funding from that sponsorship arrangement.

Again, for the giants of YouTube like PewDiePie, it doesn’t really matter – he’s obviously still making a ton of cash. Still, if that ridiculous sum of money is based on only 60% of what he should have earned from ads, just imagine how that plays out for the smaller guys looking to get into the YouTube scene. Also, it’s impossible to run a business when you’re only actually getting 60% of the money you should be – even for a giant like YouTube.

Personally, I’m not sold on YouTube Red, mainly because I’m not sure which content I’ll be keen to pay for. However, I don’t use any form of Adblock. Most sites aren’t too bad, with advertising displayed in unobtrusive banners; for those sites where advertising is done like it was on sites in the 90s, I tend to just stop visiting rather than worry about irritating pop ups. I’m not going to try and shame people who use Adblock – I know ads can be irritating and it’s your choice to install whatever you want on your own machines. But don’t be surprised at the consequences of those actions – people will always need to pay rent and buy food, and if you eliminate ad revenue as a possibility, they will need to look to other models to support themselves.

Something I’ve always wondered, and maybe somebody can enlighten me. But is it possible for you, the website or content provider to see how many visits you get each month that had something like ad blocker connected to it?

Websites can detect whether you’re running Adblock or not. For now it seems there’s little they can do about it.

Sorry, but I have less than F-all sympathy.

Youtubers found a nice niche way to earn money, that has reached it’s peak and is now in decline because people actually don’t want to watch adverts. Like all things, this business model will need to change to keep up with the tech changes and customer satisfaction.

Exactly, having an ad in a video (like the other day I saw one with not one, but five, yes, FIVE ads all slotted in nicely within the video…) is ok, but it has become more intrusive than anything else, whether it be moved from the intro to later in the vid and then you have to re buffer the remainder of said video…it’s simply annoying… With that said though, the YouTuber can then create a Pay Per View model to allow for uninterrupted(in this case high pitched screaming) entertainment…

The market is a self sufficient entity. Produce good quality content and people will pay money to sponsor you and to not see ads. It’s as simple as that. If you’re good, you’re gonna get an audience.

The problem is that people don’t switch adblock off when they’re checking out something that they like.

But isn’t that the same in any business/startup? You don’t make money at the beginning. It takes a while to break even and then a while longer to make a profit. Why should that have to be different in this medium? Edit: Especially in a market with so little risk, really….

Totally. I agree. But I can see how it makes a difference to some people…and how it is leading to paid content.
I don’t mind paying, as you say, if it’s good quality.

Ah, no I am just going to buy (either later this year or early next year, get the right car) a simple c200 diesel, a sedan.

The 320d is better at fuel economy, but the merc is just nice looking to me and feels nicer inside.

I love mercs, I really do. And I love my Subaru.

I’m big on Asian cars. Had a Merc. Was solid as a tank, but it was very bland. I’m a car lover, so I tend to buy with my heart, since I don’t use it much for commuting. Had a Renault Sport before. Lovely car…but when I sold it, it felt like I’d just gotten change for a happy meal.

I’ve owned two cars in the last ten years, the first was an Uno and I had to fold myself up just to fit in it, it was stolen and then replaced with a 2005 Ford Mondeo, one of the blandest cars to be found between here and Saturn, but hell, does it drive like a dream….

There is a A6 under a car-port on a road that I take as an alternative route back from a certain shopping centre, and the level of dust and decay on that car hurts my eyes and my car-heart

            November 2, 2015 at 14:27

Ah man… It amazes me how a car like that can just be abandoned, I don’t understand why… I mean at least try to have it towed away or sold but don’t let it just stand there and rot… Which reminds me, I travelled to Saudi Arabia a few years ago and standing next to the road was a Ford Mustang GT500 one of the later models, it had a flat tyre and about a 2 to 3mm layer of dust on it, when I asked the one guy how someone could leave a car like that just standing there, he said “Oh, that’s nothing, have you seen some of the abandoned Ferarris?”

So its the users who brought about Youtube Red because they use adblock. Yeah. No.

If users never had intrustive and often Malware infested adverts in the first place, there would be little need for adblock.

Ads make services free. Take away the ads and that service will be forced to get the money another way, usually the subscription way. And when that happens people will bitch so much about it when they (the adblockers) are the ones to be blamed for it in the first place.

we are not the reason youtube did the subscription thing PP. We all started using adblocker simply cause the internet is out of control with ads. Some of the websites I visit, for example PC Gamer, is unwatchable without adblock cause is full of ads and and popup ads. People turned their backs on television because of so much unwanted commercials. Now the internet is turning into the same thing. I won’t have it. It’s very easy to say stop using adblock, but it’s also very easy to say don’t put to much ads on your website.
