Lockjaw (1)

Marvel’s upcoming Inhumans series looks…alright I guess. The first trailer wasn’t mindblowing stuff, as it introduced the family dynamic of the Inhumans in a bland and underwhelming fashion of court intrigue and minor action beats. What the trailer did have going for it at least, was Lockjaw. The faithful mutt has been a mainstay in the comics for decades now, a pooch with purpose and power.

But who is Lockjaw? How much does he eat and can you find a shovel big enough for when nature calls? Here’s a quick breakdown on the most important member of the Inhumans family.

What’s a Lockjaw?

Lockjaw (2)

Kind of painful, which is why I recommend avoiding trying to shove an entire pizza into your gaping food-hole. HAW! Jokes aside, Lockjaw is what happens when you combine Uber with a canine. A massive hound that has the ability to teleport to anywhere on the planet and at any distance, Lockjaw serves the Inhuman royal family as their pet, primary means of transport and loyal guardian.

Here’s the creepy part though: Is Lockjaw really a dog?

Wait, you’re saying he was human?

Lockjaw (1) (2)

Maybe! To understand this bit, you need to know a thing or two about Terrigenesis. Essentially a coming of age ritual for the Inhumans, Terrigenesis involves locking an Inhuman into a chamber that exposes them to Terrigen mists that react to their altered DNA specifically. The best-case scenario is that a young Inhuman may emerge with fantastic powers, like Medusa’s dangerous hair which serves as an extension of her self or Crystal’s ability to control the weather.

Oftentimes, the end result is a mutation that makes the Inhuman evolve into a being that looks like it was face-planted on an entire plantation of ugly trees. It’s a silly ritual, much like  being circumcised at birth or playing the lottery every Friday. So was Lockjaw originally an Inhuman who underwent Terrigenesis? Kind of!

Lockjaw (3) (2)

In his first appearance in Fantastic Four #45, Stan Lee and Jack Kirb very definitely created a giant pooch with teleportation skills to pay the bills. A couple of decades later in 1983’s The Thing #3, a story revolved around Quicksilver wanting his Inhuman daughter Luna to undergo Terrigenesis, even if the process risked turning her into something with a face for radio.

At which point Lockjaw chimed in:

One retchcon later in X-Factor #71, that heavy moment was revealed to be nothing more than a prank. Holy crap, the Inhumans (and Quicksilver) can be dicks. Or was it? Because Quicksilver might have been lying according to writer John Byrne.

Lockjaw (3)

So yeah, to answer your question: Lockjaw is a mutated dog. Because anything else would be downright disturbing.

So what can Lockjaw do exactly?

Oh man, he is a proper powerhouse. Lockjaw’s primary power is that of teleportation, with its known limits having been explored in previous comics. He has the ability to teleport himself and up to one metric ton of mass across not just space but also other dimensions. His antenna is responsible for the feat as it uses his brain to tap into psionic energies, which usually and easily involves him blinking from the Moon to Earth across a distance 386 000 km without showing any signs of stress.

Lockjaw (8)

The psionic powers also make Lockjaw a superb tracker, as he locks onto extrasensory “scents” and can follow them across space and various dimensions. Also, he’s a giant dog so he’s stupidly strong and does actually live up to his namesake with a bite that can crush metals and rocks. Don;t ever play tug of war with this lovable brute. He also seems to love hanging around the current Miss Marvel, Kamala Khan, lately.

Lockjaw (7)

Plus he can leave a dump the size of the Batman V Superman critical reaction on your doorstep. Good dog. And there you go! That’s all you really need about Lockjaw. He’s big, he’s lovable and you’ll need an international visa if you plan to take him for a walk.
