The last we heard from Fox about the proposed next iteration of hit TV series 24, they were thinking of taking a narrative angle that wouldn’t necessary focus on Kiefer Sutherland’s iconic counter-terrorist agent Jack Bauer, but would allow for him to “come in and fit organically into the story, or they are prepared to do… one installment without him.” Well, it appears that the network has chosen Door no.2, as Fox chairman and CEO Gary Newman provided an update during a press tour (via EW).

“Obviously we would love to have Kiefer [Sutherland] and we went to him first. It isn’t something he wants to do at this point, but he encouraged us to continue and look for a way to bring the show back.”

Sutherland has led the the multiple Emmy-winning show since its inception in 2001, and after a four-year break since it’s supposed eighth and final season, would return to the screens again last year for the smash hit limited event series 24: Live Another Day. That show ended with Bauer being captured and probably stuck in a dank Russian gulag somewhere, so if the character was not to return it would leave his fate all up in the air.

But it might not just be his story that gets left unresolved though. When it was announced that Fox were looking at doing another 24, many thought Yvonne Strahovski’s CIA Agent Kate Morgan, introduced in 24: Live Another Day, could perhaps take the lead. Or maybe Carlos Bernard’s franchise black sheep Tony Almeida could even be brought back. But it looks like there’s actually a chance that no familiar faces will be returning at all.

“Honestly I don’t know whether we’ll see any old characters or not. It would not surprise me if it’s a total reset in terms of the characters.”

Jack Bauer is undoubtedly the legendary heart of this series, but if there was ever a character that has been put through enough and could do with a breather, he would be it. Plus, I would rather have no Kiefer Sutherland than a Kiefer Sutherland whose heart wasn’t really in it anymore. So in a way – if this is really going to go ahead – then I would kind of be in favour in a fresh start with a new cast.

Perhaps move it to a different law enforcement agency instead of the CTU again, to keep things really fresh, but just keep the real-time clock format and the crazy suspense, thrills and endless cliff-hangers and they may just have another winner. What do you guys think? Would you even be able to watch a 24 without Jack Bauer?
