In case you somehow didn’t know, we love our videogames around here. And we’ve been loving them for a very long time [insert Vietnamese prostitute’s voice here], which is why we really took to Patrick Jean’s retro-inspired short film Pixels. A lot of Hollywood bigwigs felt the same way, and it’s now being turned into a feature film. And according to the latest report from Empire Online, it will be the (not quite so) funnymen trio of Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Josh Gad that will be leading the film.
Now while we’ve appreciated the great work Gad has been doing as of late – he was one of the few highlights in Jobs and has just turned in a very popular take as the voice of Olaf the snowman in Disney’s Frozen –we’ve never really hid our disdain for just about everything that Sandler and James does, so their involvement does put a bit of a damper on what could be an interesting film. Said film which will also be written by Tim Herlihy and Tim Dowling, the guys behind virtually every Adam Sandler film ever – yeah, hope is dwindling rather rapidly here – will see aliens attacking Earth using classic video game characters, and four old game arcade champions (the fourth is going to be Rob Schneider, isn’t it) having to go back into action to save the world.
I will take some solace in the fact that this feature film take on Jean’s conceptwill be helmed by Chris Columbus (Harry Potter franchise, Home Alone, The Goonies, The Help). It’s a pretty ridiculous concept, but Columbus has the skills behind the camera to make it pretty charming.
