Hollywood has a habit of pouncing on hot topic current affairs quicker than Darryn jumps on a bar countertop after he’s had a couple tequilas. This is why we currently have three competing Lance Armstrong films in production. So it’s with some surprise that you realize that it’s already been 11 years since John Allen Muhammad took 17-year old Lee Boyd Malvo, armed with a stolen sniper rifle, on an indiscriminate killing spree that rocked Washington D.C. in 2002.

But now, 4 years after Muhammad was executed for the killings, we finally have Blue Caprice, a film detailing the events of that terrifying 3 weeks in October, and it looks really good.

“Blue Caprice” is a haunting psychological thriller about an abandoned boy (Richmond) lured to America into the shadows of a dangerous father figure (Washington). Inspired by true events, the film investigates the notorious and horrific Beltway sniper attacks from the point of view of the two killers, whose distorted father-son relationship facilitated their long and bloody journey across America.

Isaiah Washington has been a solid actor for years now already, particularly showcased in his four-time partnership with Spike Lee (Clockers, Get on the Bus, Girl 6, Crooklyn) and as a longtime cast member on popular TV drama Grey’s Anatomy. His tenure on that show though got ended with his public utterance of a certain homophobic slur, and he hasn’t really been in anything major since.

This though, seems like his ticket back to the big leagues. Critic reaction out of Sundance for the film, and particular Washington’s performance, has been incredibly strong, so this is definitely one to keep an eye on.

There’s no scheduled release date for Blue Caprice yet.
