We’ve spoken before about Amazon’s planned revival of the live-action The Tick series. It’s an exciting premise and a great opportunity for Amazon to capture the popular super-hero series market with this much loved character. One of the big questions that needed answering though, was who they would cast to play the title character, to see if they could truly find someone who would be able to adequately play the character after Patrick Warburton left it on a high. And now, that wait is over as Amazon has announced their lead characters for the series.

TheWrap has reported that it is Peter Serafinowicz that is the lucky man to be chosen as the next Tick. Those of you who are familiar with the British comedian and actor’s work will know that he is quite a chameleon in his impersonations, but this is certainly going to be something very different for him to do – but one that I think could certainly work. He has a witty sense of humour that certainly fits in with the character and lots of experience with science fiction having played supporting roles in Guardians of the Galaxy and Shaun of the Dead along with voicing Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

Warburton certainly left big shoes to fill and was well loved by fans, but they may have found someone who is adaptable enough to pull off more of the same while still being able to offer something different to the role. The new series, which will also see Tick suffering memory loss will be written and produced by Tick creator Ben Enlund and will have Warburton and Barry Josephson who also worked with the previous live action series – return as executive producers, so the continuity will still be strong. Christopher Nolan’s regular cinematographer turned director Wally Pfister (Transcendence) will be helming the series. Quite a combination.

Serafinowicz will be joined by Griffin Newman who will be playing Tick sidekick Arthur and Valorie Curry, who will be playing Dot, a nurse and Arthur’s caring sister. No other casting has yet been announced.

Let’s hope this series sticks around longer than the original Tick series, which followed the Tick, Arthur (played then by David Burke), and their crime fighting pals Captain Liberty (Liz Vassey) and Batmanuel (Nestor Carbonell). The show premiered on Fox in 2001, but was cancelled after only nine episodes. It won praise from critics however and has since amassed a devoted cult fan-base.

It’s that fan-base which Amazon is hoping to reel into their network and hopefully turn this version of The Tick into an even more popular series with fans. Now Amazon, how about taking a look at that other beloved cult sci-fi series Firefly?
