It’s nice to see that after the controversy of last year, that this time the awards are looking a lot more representative than last year. There is a good mix of non-white actors featured and although the directing, writing and other technical sections are still rather white – I’ll take it as progress.

And the biggest surprise – Amy Adams not been nominated for her role in Arrival, which I thought was a clear shot for her. It’s score is also strangely absent, which is also a surprise as that was oneo f the highlights of the film. However, Arrival still got a nod for its fantastic director Denis Villeneuve and for its great cinematography, score, editing and production design as well as best picture, so it still was widely recognized.

La La Land, which is out this week got nominated for a full 14 awards, which is a fantastic achievement and makes me even more eager to see this movie than what I already was. Outside of this though, nothing that I can say was not on the radar has been nominated. We haven’t seen many of these films yet, but at least you know what to keep an eye on in the next month or two if these kind of movies are your thing.

Hang on, Suicide Squad actually got a nomination, but at least its for something that was semi-decent in the movie – though probably still not the best in that category.

Overall, 2016 might have been seen as a bad year for a lot of people, but in terms of movies – it looked pretty good.

One of those years again where you look at the list and wonder if you know anybody who watched any of these movies.

Mel Gibson did a great job with Hacksaw, and Arrival was my favourite of the year by a long shot, top 10 all-time even.

I’m genuinely curious though, why are there always so few movies on the list? Each nominated for 5+ categories? Look at “Best Sound Mixing” … It’s like they just picked from the above movies without even considering it.
