We’re still a long way out from the Tomb Raider reboot hitting the big screen, with Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Danish Girl) on board to portray one of the most iconic gaming characters in existence. While the first lady of gaming received two movies way back in 2001 and 2003 with Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life respectively, they were action-orientated affairs that featured an established ass-kicking Lara Croft – something the reboot is steering clear of.

Oscar-winning producer Graham King recently spoke to HeyUGuys while doing press rounds for the upcoming WWII spy drama Allied, and when asked about the upcoming reboot confirmed director Roar Uthaug’s earlier statement that the movie would tread similar ground to the recent games by focusing on Lara’s origin story – with one additional detail, saying:

Well this is kind of what we call a ‘back to the roots story’. This is a young Lara Croft in search to see if her father is dead or alive, so it has a very emotional part to it and I think that’s what Alicia found so interesting about it. I think the storytelling is really good and I think we’ve got the right crew and a great director and I think it’s going to be really fun making a film like this.

For those who haven’t played the new ‘Tomb Raider’ games – and I should probably throw up a warning for incoming minor spoilers – this is a departure from what was established in Lara’s most recent adventures.

In the games her father is dead and, following her encounter with the mystical on the island of Yamatai in 2013’s ‘Tomb Raider’, in 2015’s ‘Rise of the Tomb Raider’ she pursues her late father’s research into the lost city of Kitezh and its secret of immortality. During the course of that adventure she learns that her father was assassinated by a mysterious group called Trinity for following that line of research.

Both games have delved far more deeply into Lara’s character than previous titles in the franchise, and it’s something King is very interested in pursuing in the reboot (courtesy of Slashfilm), as opposed to the more action-orientated Tomb Raider movies that were headlined by Angelina Jolie back in the day:

Listen, the box office [for the Tomb Raider movies], they weren’t disasters but I find it interesting that the story that we’re telling is really the story before she became Lara Croft, so it is a character piece. It does have a lot of really great characters, but it’s a lot of action and a lot of fun, and for me, it’s something very different. I’ve not really done a movie like that before, but I really gravitated to rebooting this franchise and we’re going to give it a shot.

As someone who’s played and enjoyed the majority of ‘Tomb Raider’ games over the years, and even quite enjoyed the earlier movies for what they were, the latest games are among my favourites because of how they’ve developed Lara as a real character you can identify with as opposed to just another avatar flipping around an environment. It’s something I think makes the games well suited to a big screen adaption, even more so than its cinematic 30 fps.

Tomb Raider is due for release on 16 March 2018.
