Captain America (3)

The first Captain America film is probably my 2nd least favourite (sorry, Iron Man 2) of all the Phase 1 Marvel movies. But that’s like saying that shoulder bacon is my 2nd least favourite cut of bacon. It’s still marvelous bacon.

What does Steve Rogers have to do with pork products? Well, nothing. But I’m saying that even with that high an opinion of the previous films, I still have some even higher hopes for its follow-up, subtitled The Winter Soldier. And based on this first trailer, it could exceed even those.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier will pick-up where Marvel’s The Avengers left off, as Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C.

Er… Anybody have a spare pair of underpants I could perhaps borrow? Thanks.

And now that I’ve recomposed myself, let’s get on with this.

My main gripe with Captain America: The First Avenger was that despite an incredible start filled with super soldier levels of heart and charm, the final act went for straight up comic booky action. It was far from bad, just not as good as what came before. Now by all accounts, Winter Soldier ditches some of that hokey charm and goes into full action-thriller territory (plus a couple badass superheroic moments, of course). And you know what? After seeing that trailer, I ain’t complaining even the teeniest tiniest amount.

There’s the jawdropping spectacle of the Helicarrier crashing down, the clever late reveal of the Winter Soldier himself (who looks like he stepped straight off the comic book page, by the way), the badass scenes like Anthony Mackie’s Falcon jumping backwards off the helicarrier, the superb looking hand to hand fighting, and still what appears to be a rather intriguing story of Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers not seeing eye to eye-patch with Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury.

If that is just a fraction of what awaits us in the movie, then I better start saving up now already for a whole new batch of underwear.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier will be slinging its shield into cinemas on April 4, 2014, which is suddenly way too far off still.
