It used to be that CW was a network all about shows featuring teenage pin-up girls/guys with impossibly chiseled features going through their privileged life “drama” in trendy nightclubs, and for the most part, that’s still true. The US network’s striking-cheekbones-and-clefted-chins per capita count is still laughably high, but those human mannequins are now being used to tell some pretty cool and interesting stories (see: The 100, Arrow, The Flash, Supernatural, etc).

And now there’s a new girl on the block. And she’s dead. Or undead. Whatever the PC term is nowadays. Simply put: She’s a zombie. But because this is the CW, she’s a pretty zombie that mostly just has eyes like mine during hayfever season. Welcome to the world of iZombie, an adaptation of the Image Comics book of the same name, spearheaded by Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas (not the Matchbox Twenty guy). The show stars Rose McIver as Liv (pun probably fully intended!), the aforementioned z-word, but the catch here is that there’s no zombie apocalypse and no Rick Grimes trying to teach his son Coral about how to kill walkers.

Liv, a former medical student, thinks that she’s the only zombie around and has thus far managed to keep her undead-ness a secret from everybody around her, as she discovers that as long as she keeps eating brains, she keeps looking like she just has some hectic allergies and not a chronic case of not being alive. To help feed the hunger, she gets a job at the morgue, where she has easy access to those grey matter morsels. But as she discovers, when eating these brains she gets visions of the deceased life, a skill that comes in handy when she gets roped into pretending to being a psychic to try to solve murder cases with a local detective.

Check out the first trailer for the show:

I missed the whole Veronica Mars bus back in the day, but have heard nothing but praise from all the Marshmellows about the show, so I have hopes that Thomas can achieve similarly successful result with what is a pretty cool concept. The source comic went full-on zombie vs monsters mode, but the show is apparently going to be sticking to just zombies which could limit it’s scope a bit, but this is still one I’ll be keeping an eye on. The show debuts on US screens on March 17, 2015.
