We have a host of new movies coming out that are trying to bring back or recreate classics of the old. What makes this next film different, is that while its trying to recreate a genre and classic feel, its doing so with a fresh story and unique style as well.  The film La La Land is looking to return us to the Hollywood musical classics of old.

And while it’s not exactly a genre of movies I was ever excited about, from what we’ve seen so far with the film, it does a sterling job at recreating those classics – and perhaps even exceed them. Too many films of its kind fall increasingly flat at recreating the classics they try to mimic, so to have one that can match it, is great to see.

The new trailer, titled “Audition”, after the song which is in the musical, highlights in particular the talents of the film’s female star Emma Stone, who actually has a superb singing voice, which is shown off here. And while I’m not exactly excited about more singing – it does look really well done and fans of the genre certainly have reason to feel excited about this movie.

In the meantime, the film has been getting a lot of critical praise for the few that have seen it. Venice festival director Alberto Barbera had this to say about the film:

La La Land is a surprising tribute to the golden age of American musicals, from An American in Paris by Vincent Minnelli to New York, New York by Martin Scorsese. It is a film that does not merely reinvent the musical genre, it gives it a brand new start. If Whiplash was the revelation of a new filmmaker, La La Land is his definitive, albeit precocious, consecration among the great directors of Hollywood’s new firmament.

Now that is quite some tribute. Whiplash as it stands is already a fantastic movie, but to say this is even better and possibly even exceeding the heights of director Damien Chazelle’s last film or those aforementioned musicals, is truly special. I’m no fan of musicals and still in two minds about this one, but if anything, it looks like it is certainly one to go watch – whether you are a fan or not.

La La Land also stars Ryan Gosling as the male lead, alongside J.K. Simmons, John Legend, Finn Wittrock, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rosemarie DeWitt. It will get a limited theatrical release on December 2nd and will then open wide on December 16th. We expect in South Africa sometime in the New Year, around awards season.
