Avengers: Infinity War will be out a week earlier as Disney reveals its future movie plans

One of the strengths of Marvel and Disney has been their consistency and reliability in not just making their universe feel cohesive despite the many writers and directors working on their films, but also in how they can routinely plan many years ahead, still delivering a movie on time when it’s needed. It’s a rare skill that other studios fail to replicate as they regularly move from delay to delay in their own efforts at churning out big blockbuster films.

Perhaps Disney is a victim of its own success now though, as the usually reliable House of Mouse has announced a flurry of date changes to its pending line-up, including the crucial one of Avengers: Infinity War. Don’t worry comic book fans, the movie hasn’t been delayed. In fact, Marvel is doing just the opposite and has moved the release date up by a full week to April 27. Considering how April 27 is a public holiday here in SA, there’s also a chance that the film may be out a day sooner for us as well, as cinema chains have done in the past. So, yes, we are actually getting the gift of getting the movie even earlier. Maybe.

Why the sudden change of schedule with the film so close to release? Well, Disney hasn’t actually given any reason, but given how jam-packed May is looking at the moment and with Disney’s other juggernaut Star Wars also releasing a movie in May, it perhaps makes sense to move Infinity War earlier so that it can rake in even more of our cash for an additional week before the rest of the big films roll round. Sounds like a good plan to me, though why Disney took so long to realise that having two big films in the same month is not a good idea is beyond me.

That’s not all that has changed though because Disney went on to reveal a host of new dates which sees six new Marvel movies added to the roster through to 2022, as well as three new untitled Pixar movies as well. On their live-action remake front, they’ve also added a slew of untitled projects and dates, with their live-action Mulan remake also being moved back 16 months to March 27, 2020. There’s some speculation though that all those “Untitled Disney Live Action” entries are in fact not remakes, but rather placeholders in case Disney’s acquisition of Fox goes through and they want to start using the Marvel Comics properties they would gain. Here’s the full Disney schedule, via Collider:

Last, but not least, the studio pulled the Anna Kendrick Christmas comedy Noelle (reportedly not a biopic of our Critical Hit colleague, though we’re still not convinced) from its theatrical release slate, and now plans to release the film as a Disney original movie instead. Not a good sign for that movie, but perhaps keeping in line with Disney’s focus on their own streaming service for the future.

So, in the end its quite a flurry of dates, but I’m sure you all stopped reading after you saw Infinity Wars was coming earlier anyway. Don’t worry we’ll be here to remind you of alallhose other films releasing closer to the time.
