I have a confession to make. One that millions of others share. I’m hooked on The Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack.

Almost every mainstream movie uses music for artistic needs. Whether that be for yanking on your heart strings or raising the hairs on your arms, music is an almost vital element of storytelling in cinema. And in Marvel’s latest box office breaking blockbuster, writer-director James Gunn used his magic to weave in 10 songs (the album boasts one extra track) from the 60’s and 70’s that most directors wouldn’t consider for a second. This is a space battle BOOM! That is a lazer ZAP! Someone is dying “Hooked on a feeling”! Wait, what?

The wonderful juxtaposition between visual tension and audio warmth that Gunn peppers throughout the movie is probably the reason I love the Awesome Mix Vol. 1 so much. And I’m definitely not alone. Yes, the tape that Star Lord is so obsessed with and uses to get his jiggy on has hit the number 1 spot in America’s Billboard 200.

The album was released on 29 July and debuted at #3 but has since made it to #1 selling over 109,000 copies along the way, one of those being mine! Songs like “O-h-h Child” and “Come and Get Your Love” are now suddenly cool again to people under the age of 60. But let me tell you a little secret: they were always awesome!  So if you want a grin on your face and a warm fuzzy feeling in your chest,  go out and BUY (yes, BUY) the album now. It’s under R100, people! Have a look at the track list below.
