And Trailer Thursday spills over into Trailer Friday! And while that doesn’t have quite the same alliteration zing, we don’t really care, because when you kick off Trailer Friday with this ridiculously good looking new trailer for Elysium, which features more story details and a hell of a lot more action, then grammatical devices suddenly don’t seem so important any more.
In the year 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined planet. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the crime and poverty that is now rampant throughout the land. The only man with the chance to bring equality to these worlds is Max (Matt Damon), an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission – one that pits him against Elysium’s Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) and her hard-line forces – but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well.
Well, hot damn, Mr Neil Blomkamp. That just looks incredible. The social issues that Blomkamp confronted in District 9 are definitely still there, but I’d say that he’s ramped up the action stakes by a huge order of magnitude here.
And please tell me that I’m not the only one that noticed that quick shot of Sharlto Copley’s Kruger brandishing what appeared to look like some kind of Darth Maul-esque double-bladed lightsaber? It is entirely possible that I hallucinated the entire thing after the badassness of this trailer caused my brain chemistry to go all out of whack for a few minutes.
