Despite existing for years and years as a book, Ender’s Game was never adapted as a feature film. That’s most likely due to the sheer scale of the war between mankind and the Formics, a battle in the stars that would have stretched the budget of any production set even a few years ago to infinity and beyond.

Gavin Hood’s adaptation on the other hand, is lookin’ mighty fiiiiiiine. Click through to see just how Hood and co made a universe at war looks so darn pretty.

In the near future, a hostile alien race called the Formics have attacked Earth. If not for the legendary heroics of International Fleet Commander Mazer Rackham (Ben Kingsley), all would have been lost. In preparation for the next attack, the highly esteemed Colonel Hyrum Graff (Harrison Ford) and the International Military are training only the best young minds to find the future Mazer.

Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a shy but strategically brilliant young leader, is recruited to join the elite. Arriving at Battle School, Ender quickly and easily masters increasingly difficult challenges and simulations, distinguishing himself and winning respect amongst his peers. Ender is soon ordained by Graff as the military’s next great hope, resulting in his promotion to Command School. Once there, he’s trained by Mazer Rackham himself to lead his fellow soldiers into an epic battle that will determine the future of Earth and save the human race.

Ender’s Game stars Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld, Ben Kingsley, Viola Davis, Abigail Breslin and Harrison Ford. It’s out November 1, so strap on your jumpsuit and enlist today. Do you want to know more?

  1. I’m really keen to see this but what is the focus demographic? Is it meant for teenage boys or is it a proper sci-fi war movie?

The way the current sci-fi movies are going, we can expect both.
proper sci-fi plot and sci-fi fanboy things, but then cheesed up, with teenboy elements.

The book it’s based on is a solid sci-fi story. So even though there are a lot of teenagers, it’s not really “young adult” like so much crap being released now. You also don’t really see much of the war itself in the book. Who knows what they’ll do in the movie though.

Probably the best Sci-fi story to date.

I hope they do it justice.

Thanx, I’ll give it a go. I’m a sucker for old-school sci-fi so I think I’ll try and find the book somewhere (note the deliberate use of the correct acronym instead of the unspeakable Sy-Fy [shudders]).

Is there a starship trooper reference at the end of every movie story you do?

Ender’s Game itself was a good read. I didn’t much care for the others.

Same, I just couldn’t get going with the rest of the series. Ended up reading Sten and it’s follow ups.
