Ever since he got cast as the dark knight, Ben Affleck has had to weather an ocean of internet hate squads assembling at his front Twitter door. Personally, I think it’s a great idea and worthy of the Batfleck underwear that I’ll no doubt be wearing in the future. Affleck recently had a chance to talk about the role, and how his Batman will differ from what has been seen on screen so far.

Speaking to Playboy, Affleck explained how director Zach Snyder won him over:

When they asked if I would be Batman, I told them I didn’t see myself in the role and I was going to have to beg off. They said I’d fit well into how they were going to approach the character and asked me to look at what the writer-director, Zack Snyder, was doing. The stuff was incredible…..It was a unique take on Batman that was still consistent with the mythology. It made me excited. All of a sudden I had a reading of the character. When people see it, it will make more sense than it does now or even than it did to me initially.

Affleck also spoke about his Bruce Wayne/Batman being more established in his role as a vigilante, having protected Gotham city for years now. A character which will be completely separate from Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy:

I don’t want to give away too much, but the idea for the new Batman is to redefine him in a way that doesn’t compete with the Bale and Chris Nolan Batman but still exists within the Batman canon. It will be an older and wiser version, particularly as he relates to Henry Cavill’s Superman character.

As for all that undeserved vitriol on the internet about his casting, Affleck isn’t worried:

I understand I’m at a disadvantage with the internet. If I thought the result would be another Daredevil, I’d be out there picketing myself. [laughs] Why would I make the movie if I didn’t think it was going to be good and that I could be good in it?

Originally scheduled for 2015, Batman vs Superman will instead be out in 2016. Henry Cavill is back as the man of steel, with Gal Gadot completing the heroic trinity as Wonder Woman in an expanded cameo role.

Gal Gadot is not the right choice at all. Even less than I initially thought Ben Affleck was.
