You have to hand it to Rian “Looper” Johnson. When it comes to Star Wars, the writer/director is somehow managing to out-JJ Abrams JJ Abrams! Despite Abram’s almost-legendary secrecy  with his projects, Star Wars: The Force Awakens experienced a number of high-profile leaks during its production. In contrast, Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII has been so airtight that at the moment the only thing we know about it is that Johnson is writing and directing it.

Well, now we can maybe add a second fact to that meager knowledge base as The Wrap is reporting that Lucasfilm/Disney have offered Oscar-winning actor Benicio Del Toro the role of the 2017 film’s main villain. Just who or what that villain is, is of course still a great big mystery, but as Del Toro’s filmography attests, the powerful actor can pull off a villainous snarl like few others.

It has to be noted however that he has not accepted the offer yet, and in fact The Wrap points out that negotiations are still in the very early stages, but apparently Lucasfilm/Disney are really gunning for him. If Del Toro does accept the gig, it would mean he has now appeared in two major Disney owned franchises, as he’s already played The Collector in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy last year. Del Toro has previously hinted that he won’t be reprising that role for 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2, which would mean that his schedule should be free enough for a major production like Star Wars.

At this point in time, we still have no idea who from the cast of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, if any, will be recurring in Star Wars: Episode VIII, but it’s probably a good bet that we’ll see the trio of new young leads in Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac returning. Just what they will be up to is once again unknown. About the only other fact that we can give for certain is that the film is scheduled for release on May 26, 2017.
