Despite how much some of you may worship the lens-flaring awesomeness of JJ Abrams’ Star Trek, there are lots of people out there that really, really hate it, and not just for the aforementioned lens flares. No, their biggest problem is that while the original show was always focused towards exploration and scientific discovery, this new incarnation is all about the pew-pew laser blaster spectacle.

But I honestly couldn’t give a Vulcan Press about this thematic shift when said pew-pew spectacle looks as good as it does in this latest trailer.

In Summer 2013, director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes “Star Trek Into Darkness.”

In the wake of a shocking act of terror from within their own organization, the crew of The Enterprise is called back home to Earth. In defiance of regulations and with a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads his crew on a manhunt to capture an unstoppable force of destruction and bring those responsible to justice.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Firstly, OMGWTFBBQ!!!!!

Okay, now that I’ve got that out of my system I can move on to some intellectual discourse.

I’ve been one of the folks that have been racking their brains trying to work out all the mysteries behind Star Trek Into Darkness, but I’ve come to realize that there’s a fairly good chance that the answers are going to be pretty mundane and completely disproportional to all the fuss we kicked up about them beforehand.

Case in point: Everybody was speculating on exactly who Peter Weller was playing due to the fact that he hadn’t been shown in a single second of footage before now, which obviously meant that his identity must be some big reveal, right? Well, you may have noticed Mr Robocop in this trailer and it turns out he’s just a Starfleet big shot. Sure, I have a feeling that his character may be related somehow to the old Star Trek timeline, but theories of him perhaps being Khan may just have been shot down.

Also, if you feel the need to continuously pause that trailer at the 01:36 mark, we’ll completely understand
