Bloody first look at Constantine animated series starring Matt Ryan

He may have had a rough 2014, but everything just seems to be coming up Constantine lately. After his live-action NBC TV series adaptation was unceremoniously cancelled three years ago, Matt Ryan was able to reprise his role as fan-favourite comic book British demonologist John Constantine in a “one time only” appearance on CW’s Arrow. Seems “one time only” means something different in Hollywood, as we also heard yesterday that Ryan’s Constantine will be showing up in the upcoming third season Legends of Tomorrow as well.

If I had to guess though, I would say all this renewed interest is to build hype for CW’s planned animated Constantine series which was first revealed back in January. Debuting on CW Seed – the US TV network’s online digital arm – sometime in 2018, this new animated show sees Ryan voice the chain-smoking master of the occult while not having to play by family-friendly network rules. Fans in attendance at New York Comic Con over the weekend got a perfect taste of what this entails, as Warner Bros. debuted the first official look at the series complete with bloody demon slaying and strong language. Basically, everything you want in a Constantine story anyway. Check it out below.

First Look! New York Comic Con attendees received a first look of Constantine, an all-new animated digital series from Warner Bros. Animation and Blue Ribbon Content following DC’s popular comic book character John Constantine (voiced by the live-action series star Matt Ryan), a seasoned demon hunter and master of the occult. Armed with an arcane knowledge of the dark arts and a wicked wit, he fights the good fight. With his soul already damned to hell, he’ll do whatever it takes to protect the innocent. With the balance of good and evil on the line‎, Constantine uses his skills to face the supernatural terrors that threaten our world and send them back where they belong. After that, who knows…maybe there’s hope for him and his soul after all.

Constantine live-action series creators/producers David S. Goyer and Greg Berlanti will be writing/producing this upcoming series as well. There’s a still lot we don’t know about it though, including exactly when it will be released next year. When it does, it is believed it will consist of five or six 10 to 15-minute long webisodes.
