I have a weird relationship with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Every time I rewatched it, or even just the more I thought it about, the less I liked what director Zack Snyder had done. BUT! despite my ever-increasing list of gripes with the film, I am seriously excited for the film’s Ultimate Edition Blu-ray edition. In between all the plot holes and boneheaded narrative decisions of the theatrical version, you could just glimpse that there’s a much better movie there, it’s just lying on the editing room floor.

Well, not so much with Ultimate Edition which promises to incorporate an extra 30 mins of deleted scenes – some of which was pretty damn critical to the story – back into the mix bringing it to a total 184 minute running time, as well as more intense action that pushes the film into R-rated territory. Not to mention whole characters and their arcs like Jena Malone’s mystery role which were completely excised from the original release.

And now Warner Bros (via Collider) have revealed the first trailer for the upcoming Blu-ray releases which actually gives us our first look at some of those scenes and extras. Check it out below.

In case you missed anything, you can head over to Collider for a breakdown of all the new footage included in the trailer. For me the most interesting scenes are the one showing what appears to be drone attacks in the African set scenes in the film’s beginning, because whatever went down there made very little sense in the cinematic version. Also, it really doesn’t look like Jena Malone is Barbara Gordon as some suspected. Bummer.

Along with the trailer WB have also revealed that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition will come with a Dolby Atmos sound mix for any compatible home theatre setup (and if you have a Dolby Atmos home theatre setup, then you are clearly richer than we are). They’ve also shared the titles of all the additional extra features that will be found on the disc besides for the movie, though you’re going to have to use some imagination and deduction to work out what they’re about.

  • Uniting the World’s Finest
  • Gods and Men: A Meeting of Giants
  • The Warrior, The Myth, The Wonder
  • Accelerating Design: The New Batmobile
  • Superman: Complexity & Truth
  • Batman: Austerity & Rage
  • Wonder Woman: Grace & Power
  • Batcave: Legacy of the Lair
  • The Might and the Power of a Punch
  • The Empire of Luthor
  • Save the Bats

Both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’s Ultimate Edition and the theatrical DVD/Blu-ray version will be made available on VOD on June 28, and will then get a full home release on July 19, 2016. Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

In Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante, fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

  1. Im sort of excited for this release because I’m actually really hoping that the hero home editors out there will take everything available and have a good go at editing something really special from all the footage. I still truly believe there is an excellent movie in here.

I just hope we (we being movie loving South Africans) are actually able to get our grubby paws on the Ultimate Edition. Knowing the online Blu-Ray selling people I deal with we won’t see that cut of the movie.
Still waiting for #XMen: Days of Future Past Rogue Cut to be available here in SA.
