Thanks to the well-oiled machine we got going over here (and no, that’s not a jab at Darryn’s oily complexion), you guys probably didn’t even notice that I was actually on holiday visiting some family since last week. The time off gave me some time to catch up on my reading, and get stuck into James S.A. Corey’s latest Expanse novel Babylon’s Ashes. This is the sixth book in the bestselling sci-fi series, and it’s still as great as the first story. That first story being the one that sci-fi TV fans recently discovered for themselves to much geeky delight in SyFy’s critically acclaimed The Expanse.

The second season of the brilliant space opera is just over a month and half away, and while we’ve already had two looks at it thanks to a Comic-Con trailer and then another trailer, today we’re getting two more. One is just a 45-second TV spot highlighting the complex sociopolitical landscape of this future where Mars and Earth are at each others’ throat with the Belt Colonies caught in the middle. The second trailer though is the real money shot, as it shows off extended action beats including a lot of focus on TV series newcomer and soon to be your new favourite badass, Gunnery Sergeant Roberta “Bobbie” Draper (played by 6-foot tall Samoan actress and boxer Frankie Adams), and the rest of her Martian Marines.

Check out the trailers below.

If you’ve read the novels (and I highly recommend them), then you would know that the second book, Caliban’s War, kicks off with a prologue scene first, before we get to Bobbie and the Martian Marines getting into a very intense situation that leads to her involvement with the crew of the Rocinante. But according to what showrunner Naren Shankar told EW earlier in the year, you’ll meet her even quicker in the TV series version.

“You will meet her in the first three seconds of the show. She’s in the opener. We do pull things forward in the book, we’ve pulled things out of the novella, a lot of rearrangement of certain elements, but while respecting the overall plot framework of those books. We pulled her up.”

That’s not the only thing they’ve tweaked, as they used Bobbie as the POV character to give a look at a whole other side of this intergalactic conflict.

“But with Bobbie — you know what happens at the very beginning of Caliban’s War — and while there was a ton of world building there in Season 1, the one thing that we weren’t really able to get into was a true Martian perspective on the events that are going on in the world.

We had those two episodes with the capture of Lopez and the Donnager, which gives you kind of a window into it, but we didn’t really spend much time with the Martians and how they felt about Earth and felt about the Belt. And so, what we are doing in Season 2 is giving a different view into the events of the story.

So, we start with Bobbie at her team in episode 1. And we get to spend time with them before the events on Ganymede and the beginning of Caliban’s War. So, what it allowed us to do is build characters, build the team camaraderie, build all of that Martian perspective that we had to pull back in Season 1 and bring that front and center into season 2. That helps us frame the Earth, the Belt, and Mars. That really is the tripod on which we’ll see them stand.

The Expanse‘s season two premieres on SyFy on February 1, 2017.

  1. Awesome show. I like how the science feels real…like it is a natural progression from where we are now. No pew pew lazers.
