I loved writer-director Andrew Dominik’s The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, not just for having a title so long that you need to stop for a smoke break mid-way through while saying it, but because it was a damn fine movie filled with great characters. One of those characters, the eponymous Jesse James, was played to great effect by Brad Pitt, and now the two are teaming up again.

But this time they’re tackling some of the criminal underground in what looks to be the deliciously dark Killing Them Softly.

The film received a pretty positive reception when it debuted at Cannes earlier this year, and judging from that trailer I can see why. I’m simply loving the sombre yet also humourous tone on display, sort of like an Americanized, more mature Guy Rictchie gangster flick. Also, any trailer that uses Johnny Cash already has a leg up on the competition in my book.

Synopsis:

Three dumb guys who think they’re smart rob a Mob protected card game, causing the local criminal economy to collapse. Brad Pitt plays the enforcer hired to track them down and restore order. KILLING THEM SOFTLY also features Richard Jenkins (THE VISITOR), James Gandolfini (“The Sopranos”), Ray Liotta (NARC), Scoot McNairy (MONSTERS), Ben Mendelsohn (ANIMAL KINGDOM), and Vincent Curatola (“The Sopranos”). Max Casella, Trevor Long, Slaine and Sam Shepard also make appearances. KILLING THEM SOFTLY is written for the screen and directed by Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford), and is based on the George V. Higgins novel, “Cogan’s Trade.”
