By the power of Grayskull, He-Man is coming back as a new Netflix series headed by Kevin Smith!

By the power of Grayskull! I HAVE NEWS ON A NEW MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE TV SHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW! With She-Ra and the Princesses of Power proving that there’s some magic to be mined in nostalgia provided that a top notch creative team puts a fantastic new spin on the source material. She-Ra did just that and more with a stunning art style and actual storytelling that rewrote the book on the gloriously cheesy and glorified toy adverts from the 1980s, and now it’s time for Prince Adam to wield his power sword once again as He-Man is making a comeback.

At the Masters of the Universe celebration that is the annual Power-Con event, film director Kevin Smith (who knows a thing or two about mining for nostalgia as he still refers to himself as the guy who directed Clerks more than twenty years ago) revealed the revival. Unlike She-Ra, this series won’t be an entirely brand new take on the franchise but will instead pick up where the classic show ended and focus on finishing up a few lingering plot threads.

“I’m Eternia-ly grateful to Mattel TV and Netflix for entrusting me with not only the secrets of Grayskull, but also their entire Universe,” Smith said via Variety of the show which will be called Masters of the Universe: Revelation.

MOTU

In ‘Revelation,’ we pick up right where the classic era left off to tell an epic tale of what may be the final battle between He-Man and Skeletor! Brought to life with the most metal character designs Powerhouse Animation can contain in the frame, this is the Masters of the Universe story you always wanted to see as a kid!

“’Masters of the Universe’ has been a cultural phenomenon for generations, inspiring fans to discover their own power within,” vice president of Mattel TV Rob David added.

Fans of this franchise have been waiting for the continuation of these characters, and Kevin Smith, as a ‘Masters’ superfan himself, is the perfect champion and partner to expand the canon through a dynamic animated series on Netflix.

I’m in two minds over this announcement. You take a show like She-Ra and you can see why it works so brilliantly: It’s a reinvention that picks the best parts of its past, runs wild with it and isn’t afraid to craft a new story that feels wholly fresh. I know that He-Man is beloved, but have you actually watched an episode of that classic series lately? It has not aged well, the cheese is thick and it functions as a cross between selling toys (which was the original intent to be fair) and public safety messages.

There’s nothing wrong with revisiting the past, but here’s hoping that Smith in his role as showrunner can find a direction for the show that feels fresh and exciting. She-Ra has set the benchmark pretty high, and it’ll be up to an amazing creative team to reach it, let alone surpass it. So far, the team assembled for Revelation sounds pretty solid though!

Eric Carrasco from Eric Carrasco (“Supergirl”), Tim Sheridan (“Reign of the Supermen”), Diya Mishra (“Magic the Gathering”) and Marc Bernardin (“Alphas”) head the writing side of this resurrection, while the animation team from the recent Castlevania project for Netflix are handling the visuals.

I am curious to see how much they’ll change about Prince Adam’s appearance, if they change it at all! I mean he was very “metrosexual” for the era with his perfectly styled blonde hair, penchant for pink clothing, and his very square facial features!

“Brought to life with the most metal character designs Powerhouse Animation can contain in the frame” – this has me excited. Though having recently seen the Invader Zim movie, perhaps the nostalgia watching is better left avoided?

Can we stop saying that the Netflix She-Ra is so good. It very much is NOT. Stop praising it for doing worse than the bare minimum, even though they were coasting on the 80s nostaglia adversting power from the original name…
