What is the future of film? I’m not talking the industry itself, but the actual strips of material on which a few dozen frames of picture are juxtaposed next to each other.

The industry has been slowly moving towards the digital age for quite some time now, as the benefits offered outweigh the traditional format by a hefty margin, and now, Martin Scorsese has decided to jump on the HDier bandwagon as well.

After racking up a few rewards for Hugo, which was shot digitally, Scorsese has embraced the medium for his upcoming flick, The wolf of Wall Street, according to his frequent film-editing partner, Thelma Schoonmaker.

Speaking to Empire, Schoonmaker spoke about the decision to abandon the ancient industry method of producing films;

It would appear that we’ve lost the battle. I think Marty just feels it’s unfortunately over, and there’s been no bigger champion of film than him.

It’s a very bittersweet thing to be watching films with him now that are on film. We’re cherishing every moment of it. The number of prints that are now being made for release has just gone down, and it would appear that the theatres have converted so quickly to digital.

Schoonmaker confirmed that the upcoming movie would also begin principal production in August, describing it further;

It’s about this man in the late ’90s [Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jordan Belfort] who got people to start investing in much cheaper stocks. It was a big scam, and he went to jail. They were out of their minds.

Out of their minds! He’s out of jail now, doing motivational speaking. He supposedly feels bad about what he did…”

Fewer and fewer filmmakers these days are sticking with the traditional format, as digital happens to offer more advantages than drawbacks, something which has obviously caught the eye of Scorsese, who used to be a firm advocate of it.

Scorsese will be using his next film as a method to learn even more about the format, but it is a positive sign to see some familiar stalwarts of Hollywood finally take a step forward into the future of creating movies.
