Tony Stark isn’t the only hero in town who happens to be wearing some high-tech armour. Sometimes, you need a soldier to get a dirty job done. Someone who knows a battlefield inside and out, and isn’t afraid to drop an entire tank on the doorstep of any general who threatens peace. That’s when you call in for some air support from James Rhodes AKA War Machine.

After liberating the Iron Man Mark II armour from Tony Stark following an altercation with his best friend, Rhodey outfitted it with extra weapons and at least one terrible rocket based on Hammer Tech. Like most other suits based on Stark’s Iron Man technology, the War Machine armour has built-in flight capabilities, repulsor hand cannons, super-strength, reflexes and is tough enough to take a massive beating from Iron Man, various Hammer drones and Ivan Vanko in one battle.

After outfitting the base Mark II model, Rhodey added a mini-gun, rocket launchers and wrist-mounted machine guns to an already formidable suit of armour. Further enhancements saw the newer War Machine armour undergo some rebranding as the Iron patriot, resulting in a sleeker design and the mini-gun being replaced with a static shock cannon.

Skilled in hand to hand combat, Rhodes held his own against Extremis enhanced soldiers and is a keen marksman with regular firearms, able to easily embarrass Tony Stark in battle. As an army veteran, Rhodes is also trained in the art of war, using his combat experience to come up with tactics and strategies to help win any battle.
