You think of Daredevil, and you most likely picture Ben Afflek in the role of the man without fear, in a film that was less than successful, despite being rock-solid and well cast. A decade later, and Marvel is ready to give ol’ hornhead a second chance, but this time, on a smaller scale that could allow for more freedom than usual. They’re going to need to first find that hero though. And it looks like Charlie Cox is their man.
Here’s the official announcement from Marvel on the casting of Cox as the Hell’s Kitchen hero:
Marvel is proud to announce that acclaimed actor Charlie Cox has joined “Marvel’s Daredevil,” an all-new 13-episode series premiering on Netflix in 2015. Best known for his acclaimed work in “Boardwalk Empire” and “Stardust,” Cox will play Matt Murdock, the lead role in this all-new Marvel Television series. Blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, Matt Murdock fights against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the super hero Daredevil in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.
Marvel’s first original series on Netflix is Executive Produced by series Showrunner Steven S. DeKnight (“Spartacus,” “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer,” “Angel”) and Drew Goddard (“Cabin in the Woods,” “Lost,” “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer,” in addition to writing the first two episodes of “Marvel’s Daredevil), along with Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Smallville,” “Heroes”).
“Marvel’s Daredevil” is produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios.
That’s some solid casting right there. Cox got his breakthrough way back in 2007 in Stardust, so that’s the action qualification right there. For most folks however, he’s Owen Slater on Boardwalk Empire, so that covers some solid acting as well, as Cox happens to have a dark side in that series. Cox won’t be alone though, as casting announcements for the rest of the Defenders should be coming up soon. Expect to hear more about Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones when they eventually team up on Netflix.

I wonder what tone they’re going to go with for these new series. Marvel movies & SHIELD are all fairly lighthearted overall. Don’t know if I actually want dark & gritty, especially if they’re supposed to fit into the universe.

I don’t think we should be expecting True Detective here, but I have a feeling that these Netflix series might go a little darker and grittier than the rest. It’s down in the grime that these street-level heroes work best. They don’t do crazy sci-fi plots about global destruction, they’re taking down drug dealer and killers.
A perfect example of this is actually the Daredevil movie. The director’s cut is way darker than the theatrical version, and it works soooooo much better,

That’s what I’m thinking will happen. Just don’t want it to be dark all the time.
The director’s cut of Daredevil makes it an entirely different movie. Really enjoyed it.
