Charlie Hunnam teases an interesting mash-up of genres in new KING ARTHUR film

Some times when announcements come out of movies getting made, the first reaction to the idea is “what are they thinking?” And while, the initial thought of a King Arthur movie might seem not that bad of an idea, even if it’s been done so many times before, when it was announced that Guy Ritchie was going to be directing it, that was the first reaction I got as well. No discredit to Guy Ritchie or even what the final result of the movie may be, but it’s difficult to see the directors flamboyant style fit in with a historical epic around the character of King Arthur.

However, that hasn’t stopped people getting excited about the movie, and in particular the films star, Charlie Hunnam (who’s getting paid for it, so he better be excited) who is doing his best to build up the film. In a recent interview with Empire, the actor had the following to say:

(Ritchie’s) created a very rich, exciting world. I describe it to my friends as Lord Of The Rings meets Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels. (It’s) an unlikely marriage of two things, but it works and Arthur will be “rough around the edges”.

Now, I was skeptical of the movie and how it would work, but now I’m just intrigued. Those two movies are films that I both love, but for very different reasons. If the actor has it spot on and Ritchie is able to successfully merge the best of both of these films, we could have something truly epic on our hands. Or something incredible terrible. It really could go either way. And I’ll probably watch just to see how it comes together more than anything else.

King-Arthur

It’s a bold vision though and one which you have to give credit to the team for wanting to pull off. I’m also keen to see exactly how “rough around the edges” the film will be. By that description, it seems we can expect that Guy Ritchie is focusing less on trying to fit into the period of the film and likely going to be a little more creative in his retelling of the famous story. Which to me, as someone who is not a big fan of many previous King Arthur movies, is exactly what I’d like to see.

What do you make of the news? Any other interesting in film mash-ups you might be interested in seeing?
