Sizzle reels be sizzlin’ yo! They’ve always been around, as directors create video pitches for studios to get a feel for what their vision for a potential film could be. Generally though, they never see the public eye. But after Joe Carnahan released his failed Daredevil video pitch to much fanfare, other directors began cottoning onto the fact that it’s a great way to build up support for future endeavours.

But you don’t need to tell Kevin Tancharoen that. In 2010 the Fame director was handed the reins to the Mortal Kombat franchise based on the viral video that he created to show what he envisaged for MK. And now we get to see what he would have done had he landed the directing gig for The Hunger Games.

As you may have noticed, Tancharoen spliced together the footage from a number of different movies, with one or two original bits squeezed in here and there. The end result though is a much darker take on Suzanne Collins’ tale with a much heaver science fiction influence than director Gary Ross came up with.

I kind of like Ross’ more grounded approach for the first film, however knowing what happens in the later books (Shhhhh… It’s a secret) this much more grim sci-fi approach is probably what we’re actually going to end up with.

It’s a valiant effort though, and you can’t say that Tancharoen wasn’t ambitious with his casting choices, but I think Lionsgate made the right choice in the end.

Now, Mr Tancharoen, how about you stop showing us stuff you’re never going to make, and actually get around to showing us that Mortal Kombat movie we’ve been waiting for for the last 2 years?
