If a pic of the Merc With the Mouth lounging on a bear like a boss Burt Reynolds or video of him dispatching Mario Lopez in decidedly un-PG-13 like fashion wasn’t enough to get you stoked for Ryan Reynold’s picture perfect performance in Deadpool, then here’s… well, some more pics and vids of Reynolds as Deadpool (Hey, if at first you don’t succeed…). But this time we actually get to see what Reynolds will be like in the movie for real, as some footage and snaps of the film’s shoot in Vancouver has now surfaced online (via Collider, Live For Films).
And from what we can see it looks great! Reynolds’ Deadpool costume still looks to me like possibly the most faithful comic book to screen adaptation we’ve seen in a major Hollywood production since the late Christopher Reeve wore his underpants on the outside for Superman. Hell, if you look carefully at the pics, you’ll notice that it even has that little floppy piece at the top of his head that some comic book artists have liked drawing on the character in the past.
Just Jared has another, much clearer set of pics of the character in action from the same shoot and according to JoBlo, rumour has it that this scene is actually a recreation of the CG test reel that was released last year which actually got this movie greenlit after being stuck in development hell for years.
You may have noticed some sort of weird facial getup on the character in those pics. I’m guessing that they’re reference markers to be enhanced digitally in post-production to allow for the character’s trademarked mismatched expressive eyes. That would really be an incredible touch, and make for a stark departure of the current “dark makeup around eyes” routine used in most comic book movies. It’s that sort of attention to detail, along with the “true to the source” R-rated insanity that seem to be hinted, that has me stupidly excited for this movie.
Deadpool is directed by Tim Miller from a scrip by Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. It also stars Morena Baccarin as Copycat, T.J. Miller as Weasel, Gina Carano as Copycat, and Ed Skrein as an unknown villain. The X-Men’s Colossus is said to play a major role although X-Men actor Daniel Cudmore has confirmed he will not be reprising the role. Deadpool is set for release on February 12, 2016. Here’s the official synopsis:
Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.
