Back when the news first broke that Disney would be purchasing Marvel Comics, there was one thing that immediately popped up. Well actually all the meme pics of Spider-Man with mouse ears popped up first, but following closely thereafter though was the realization that some of the most gifted animators on the planet would now have access to one of the best stables of characters/stories ever. And so we waited for the first Disney/Marvel animated movie… And waited. And waited some more.

And then finally it was announced last June: the manga inspired Big Hero 6! And now you can look at it, in all it’s big-eyed glory!

The first bit of footage for the film – which will be helmed by Winnie the Pooh director and self-proclaimed comic book fanboy Don Hall – has now been unveiled, along with the film’s first official plot synopsis and release date.

From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Big Hero 6,” an action comedy adventure about brilliant robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who finds himself in the grips of a criminal plot that threatens to destroy the fast-paced, high-tech city of San Fransokyo. With the help of his closest companion—a robot named Baymax—Hiro joins forces with a reluctant team of first-time crime fighters on a mission to save their city. Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, and featuring comic-book style action and all the heart and humor audiences expect from Walt Disney Animation Studios, the CG-animated “Big Hero 6” hits theaters in 3D on November 7, 2014.

Although there’s very, and I mean very little actually happening in that clip, I like the look and feel of it. It has an almost Ghost In the Shell: Innocence aesthetic to it, which is certainly not a bad thing.

Hall spoke to Hero Complex about the film, where he revealed that what attracted him to the project were the various mergers; of Marvel and Disney, East and West, Tokyo and San Francisco.

“I was looking for something on the obscure side, something that would mesh well with what we do. The idea of a kid and a robot story with a strong brother element, it’s very Disney….Marvel properties take place in the real world. We were looking for something to do where we could make our own world — bring in the Japanese influences,  have recognizable landmarks mashed up with a Japanese aesthetic.”

Big Hero 6 will be hitting cinemas in 3D on November 7, 2014.
