When Marnie

It’s a new era for Studio Ghibli. The Japanese powerhouse animation bid farewell to one of its founders, Hayao Miyazaki with his final film The Wind Rises. That departure has left a gap that some new talent will fill up, and the first contender out of the gate is Hiromasa” Arrietty” Yonebayashi with his animated flick, When Marnie Was There.

Anna hasn’t a friend in the world – until she meets Marnie among the sand dunes. But Marnie isn’t all she seems..

Based on the 1981 book of the same name by Joan G Robinson, When Marnie Was There tells the tale of Anna, a lonely young girl who strikes up a friendship with the strange title character. Just when things are looking up for Anna however, Marnie disappears and Anna has to learn some hard truths. There’s no dialogue in the trailer above, but it does at least feature that trademark quality Studio Ghibli animation.

An English adaptation has yet to be announced, but it shouldn’t be too far off as the western market usually responds well to these releases. If you’re in Japan though, you can find the film at their local cinemas from July 19.

I’d be keen to see it. Ghibli has had a real problem getting directors from under Miyazaki, the exception being Isao Takahata. But I have not seen Arrietty yet.
